Pre-Season Fixture thread (22/23)

Yeah, not suggesting he will or should be ahead of either, but coming on to the ball and whipping it in or attacking the opposition full back suits him more. Not seen enough to comment defensively.

Good delivery from Ronan for the goal.

Formation is confusing me a bit, at different times so far it's looked like it could be any of 433, 343 or 442.

Looked most like the latter of those options as the half ended.

Corbeanu is not for me.

Dreadful defending from Coady leading to an equaliser. Caught square and flat footed, doesn't react to the man making a run so a simple ball over his head has someone clean through.

Silly from Mosquera who made a good recover run but laid hands on the forwards shoulders so it was called back for a penalty despite being rattled into the keepers legs.

Some decent football in the middle. Ronan, Cundle and Hodge all tidy little footballers buzzing about getting on the ball, Griffiths looks a bit ordinary in comparison.

Someone just missed a sitter, think Corbeanu or Griffiths.

Think it was Bueno coming in from the left and his shot was parried back into the centre of goal, straight to someone's feet who then slipped and ballooned it over the bar from about 6 yards. Shocker.

Behind now, two centre halves not doing themselves any favours on that one.

Poor clearance from Coady ricochets off an opponent on the edge of the box and straight to their forward who easily beats Coady 1v1 and squares it to a team mate for a tap in, Boly not tracked that run into the centre at all leaving him unmarked.

Decent game overall but the two goals against were poor. Seemed to be a fair bit of changing about positions, perhaps centred around Lembikisa who I thought looked poor throughout.

First half seemed mainly 442 with Mosquera right back, Lembikisa right midfield and Hodge/Cundle paired up top, though the former dropped in at times. Second half seemed the same shape but Bueno pushed up to left midfield with Lembikisa behind him and Corbeanu swapped to the other flank. Towards the end of the game might have shifted more towards 343 or the 442 just got very lopsided, but you had Lembikisa back over on the right playing inside/behind Mosquera and Hodge seemed pulled wider to the left. Not sure if Mosquera is being Zubar-ed a bit, has he played centre half yet this preseason? Got the athleticism to play on the flank but not sure he's got the finesse.

The tiny trio cited earlier look good footballers, wouldn't expect any of them to suddenly light up the PL but all look perfectly serviceable for intermittent supporting roles. Griffiths steady but unspectacular, Bueno very similar to RAN stylistically and Corbeanu is pure show pony.

Two goals against largely sit with the only two genuine first teamers playing, though maybe they lose that title this season with the formation change.

1st half 3-5-2 (that's a loose 2)

Storer
Mosquera--Coady--Boly
Lembikisa--Griffiths--Hodge--Ronan--Bueno
Cundle
Corbeanu
2nd half 4-3-3

Storer
Mosquera--Coady--Boly--Lembikisa
Hodge--Griffiths--Ronan
Corbeanu--Cundle--Bueno

Neither formation really worked with these players but Ronan, Bueno and first half Lembikisa were good.

Some really good pressing and movement but you can tell these players aren't good enough for the first team.

We need more strikers at the club it's appalling we don't have more than Raul. Cundle really doesn't work as a false 9.

Hodge and Ronan played as 8's in the main. I don't see it with Hodge at all, he's just not ready. Griffiths is a defensive midfielder, neat and tidy but needs competitive games to get that position right. Ronan played well as an eight particularly knocking balls around from midfield.

We need a ball carrying midfielder to play this system and we don't really have one yet.

Poor Theo has no future here, I've no idea what he's actually good at?

I only saw the first 10 mins, but that was definitely 3 centre halves and wing backs

I think there's a good chance he's one of
those lads that had an adults body at 15 which gave him an unatural advantage at that age and is now at the stage where everyone has caught up

Ronan look pretty good. Did have a lot of time on the ball though.

I liked Theo in the youth but think you're right.

He's just not kicked on and definitely needs another loan.

With regards the Besiktas game, what was the point in making seven substitutions with five minutes of the game left? Seemed daft to me.

If we'd have subbed Chiqinho off with 5 minutes to go, he wouldn't have got injured!

I'm sure the youngsters got some developmental and emotional value out of it, as small as the cameo was

Some of the players looked tired a good bit before then though, I would have thought it would have been more beneficial all round to have subbed maybe 20 minutes before time. Still, I suppose Lage knows best.

I usually avoid the Birmingham Mail website where I can but this was fairly interesting
Analysis of the Alaves game showed Wolves’ coaching staff that in 45 minutes, Kilman made the same number of high intensity sprints that he would normally manage in a full match as part of a back three.

Really interesting read. It is clear that Bruno was never happy with having to play 3 at the back by default, and that doing so had an adverse affect on all other aspects of how he wanted the team to play. It also sounds to me as if Collins/Kilman is almost certainly going to be our CB pairing.

Fingers crossed he hasn't overcoached them and they end up paralysed by overload of information. If it comes good we may not struggle as badly as I fear.
