O'Neil In, Out and Shaking it all about

Seen some accusing the fans of being fickle because they were behind GON less than 12 months ago, kind of pointed out that football is very much the here and now and sticking with GON now on that basis is nothing more than sentiment and blind faith. To add coming 14th isn’t what I call big credit in the bank either.
12 months ago opponents hadn’t learnt that he’s a one trick pony that got carried by Neto.

We had Neto and Hwang in the purple patch of his career.

Ones gone and the others gone back to looking a competition winner.

Sadly, whether he is sacked today or on the 31 May, I can't see it making any difference in us getting relegated. I have long used Goals Against as the best predictor of which teams are going to get relegated. Today, I checked up on the teams with the most goals conceded in the last few seasons:

2023-2024
Sheff Utd 104
Luton 85
Burnley 78

2022-2023
Leeds 78
Southampton 73
Bournemouth 71 (Not relegated)

2021-2022
Norwich 84
Leeds 79 (Not relegated)
Watford 77

2020-2021
West Brom 76
Southampton 68 (Not relegated)
Palace 66 (Not relegated)

2019-2020
Norwich 75
Villa 67 (Not relegated)
Bournemouth 65

In the last five seasons, the team that has conceded the most goals has been relegated. (I'm sure some of the statos on here have both better memories and better records which could well invalidate this rule of thumb).

The current "top" seven of goals conceded are:
Wolves 27
Ipswich 21
West Ham 19
Southampton 19
Brentford 18
Leicester 18
Everton 17

Could a new manager fix our porous defence sufficienlty in the remaining games? If they did, could we still get more than a point a game for the remaining 28 fixtures?

I'm not confident that they could.

McCoist thinks that Lopetegui needs to win to keep his job and is in more danger than ONeil. He worries for West Ham but thinks we will get better which he clarifies as “a crazy thing to say given Wolves are bottom of the league”. Yes Ally, yes it is! But then goes on to say he thought we would beat Palace but we’re actually lucky to get a point!

How is he getting such an easy ride. At least it’s actually being discussed nationally now which will put some pressure on Jeff

He's probably right.

West Ham fans/crowd much more aggy/demanding/expectant than Wolves currently?

O'Neil (and the club) getting a pretty easy ride from our fans as well as the media

Pretty much nails it to be fair and this where Hobbs should be sacked for allowing a squad to be so unbalanced and completely lacking in suitable cover at the back.
A new manager probably will be able to reduce it a goal a game which would give us half a chance.
Anybody with an ounce of football knowledge would know that it’s virtually impossible to stay up conceding the goals we do. We’ve proven we probably aren’t good enough to outscore most teams in 90 minutes.

They beat Man United last week. We beat Luton about when the old testament was written.

Presuming Shi sticks with GON until relegation is practically certain, who is going to want the job knowing he will be managing in the Championship next season with a much weaker squad and limited resources? And, of course, the current regime still in charge.

For me personally, i want him to get his face out of that fucking tablet at pitch side, and stand up and watch the game for real.
Use the tablet for a quick personal replay on a specific point, but watch the game as a whole as it plays out in real time.
If i was a player i would wonder how he expects me to see at 100mph during a game, what he's watching with instant replays, and discussing it, not with the players on the pitch, but the numpty sat next to him.

I'm sure they have the ability to watch a reply of a contentious point/decision etc. but the tablet will mainly be used for player data on average positions of our/opposition players and other such stats which could influence tactical decisions.

He clearly isn't very good at using them though.

Probably just using it to watch Ted Lasso, right lads #rofl

I think O'Neil being English and willing to run round the Studio giving insight into his tactics helps explain why he gets such an easy ride from the media. Gary Neville calling out our aimless tactics v Liverpool was the first time I had heard anything negative about O'Neil in the media. Most people who support Wolves I speak to still think he's doing a good job. Also a perception he was harshly sacked at Bournemouth without any consideration for how well the successor has done...

On the drive home it was Andy Goldsteins turn, when talking about West Ham, to mention that Gary O’Neil will be in the running for that job because “he is better than where Wolves are in the table”. 🤣

I posted 'taxi for Gaz' on a mates WhatsApp group on Saturday and got loads of shocked emojis in response. I pointed out we'd got one win 20 v Luton and it all went quiet. He's the Max Kilman of managers - outside perception is way better than the reality.

I think if we beat Southampton it may give a lift and the team some confidence and he should be given another game or two.
Lose or draw and he has to go.
Not sure who a good replacement would be, Moyes I suppose.

Everyone thinks he's wonderful but don't want him at their club.

It's all a bit weird to be honest as is the fact that he is not being questioned despite 1 win in 20

Massive apologies for the source but this isn't far off
