Sadly, whether he is sacked today or on the 31 May, I can't see it making any difference in us getting relegated. I have long used Goals Against as the best predictor of which teams are going to get relegated. Today, I checked up on the teams with the most goals conceded in the last few seasons:
2023-2024
Sheff Utd 104
Luton 85
Burnley 78
2022-2023
Leeds 78
Southampton 73
Bournemouth 71 (Not relegated)
2021-2022
Norwich 84
Leeds 79 (Not relegated)
Watford 77
2020-2021
West Brom 76
Southampton 68 (Not relegated)
Palace 66 (Not relegated)
2019-2020
Norwich 75
Villa 67 (Not relegated)
Bournemouth 65
In the last five seasons, the team that has conceded the most goals has been relegated. (I'm sure some of the statos on here have both better memories and better records which could well invalidate this rule of thumb).
The current "top" seven of goals conceded are:
Wolves 27
Ipswich 21
West Ham 19
Southampton 19
Brentford 18
Leicester 18
Everton 17
Could a new manager fix our porous defence sufficienlty in the remaining games? If they did, could we still get more than a point a game for the remaining 28 fixtures?
I'm not confident that they could.
