Out of our entire first XI Bennett's was surely the easiest position to upgrade

This isn’t strictly true though is it? Donk is an isolated incident (we were also wedded to 2 in the middle with Moutinho and Neves thought be instrumental to our play, rumours he was overweight and was late back from the WC not helping)

If we’d signed a CB with ability then he could go straight into the team. Boly and Miranda went straight in. One had ability and stayed in the team. The other did not.

We shouldn't have sent Rodders out :D

I don't think it's as simple as is being made out, you want a centre half who is objectively and significantly better than Saiss and Bennett. They're both very good players and fully adapted to English football. Those two you mention went into the Championship where we hardly had to defend as we were miles better than every single team.

City signed Laporte and hardly picked him for months, it's a big deal for centre halves to deal with the increased physicality, even if they have the ability and even if they are naturally pretty big. Let's say by some miracle that we'd signed Saliba AND managed to persuade Saint-Etienne that we needed him now, not next year. Still reckon he wouldn't be playing all the time.

Vallejo does look hopeless but earlier this year he was playing actual La Liga games for Real Madrid, on merit. There's your mark for the transition required.

Of course we could buy an English centre half but they all appear to be shite, as evidenced by Lewis Dunk and Michael Keane getting international calls.

Yeah but I very much doubt the singer from Starship is going to play.

He wrote himself off for a good while last week.

Exactly. That’s why I agreed with your team and proposed the only possible alternative IMO

I would hide under your bed and panic all day tomorrow then. They average about 0.6 goals a game, don't forget.

I would be rather more interested in the fact that their shite defence has to deal with Jota and Jimenez.

Fuck be paddy. Your OTT positivity about everything is fine, that’s your choice. But don’t make everyone else’s more grounded opinions seem like we’ve said something purely outrageous.

So Vallejo doesn't come into the equation for either of us (and hopefully Nuno). Doesn't need to be mentioned then and I think Coady struggles against physical forwards (Mitrovic, Rondon, Richarlison) rather than Joelinton who played more as a #10 or from the left for Hoffenheim and definitely won't be "beasting" anyone tomorrow. He's more Andy Keogh than Duncan Ferguson.

Not having a go you understand, let's just not bring in factors that we don't think apply (I think at the moment Mr Curls would struggle against current day Andy Keogh, last seen playing in the Saudi Arabian second tier)

Gayle is supposed to be playing tomorrow instead of/as well as Joelinton

We should've bought s quality CB. Konsa and Engels before their moves would have been good choices for back up.

But there are plenty of CB's out there who we could've got as an improvement on our own. It's shows how piss poor our recruitment team is in general.

I think we get very, very specific in what we want at times and we miss players that we could probably adapt to our system. Villa ended up buying too many centre halves in their trolley dash and so Konsa (and indeed Hause - should we have kept him?) isn't getting anywhere near.

You don't want to pay eight figures (as is the market) for a marginal improvement though, do you. I don't think Ryan Bennett is an absolute defensive God, he's just a decent centre half. Is Lewis Dunk better than him, probably, just about. Do I want to pay £40m for that privilege, no I do not.

Aye - I may well be being a little bit too much looking in the light here.

I am sure your opinion is absolutely grounded, but the one thing I would ask you to remember is Newcastle are a)shit and b)managed by the worst novelist in football management.

Now we might come unstuck tomorrow, of course we might, but we are a better side and the balance of probabilities says we should not. Hopefully Boly is assessed and misses only tomorrow. If that isn't the case, we must get through to January 1 and then fire in some very serious money to get a top, top centre back.

Having never seen Vallejo play myself I thought that on paper his pedigree made it look a decent signing. I fail to see how anybody who'd scouted him properly thought he would be though.

Well he was looking alright in his appearances for Real Madrid. Problem is the Premier League is causing him nightmares in terms of pace and physicality.

I probably did see him play for Real at least once last season but have no recollection of it.

Watched most of Spain's U21 games in the summer and other than his horror challenge vs Germany, didn't stand out as a bombscare. Just your stock young Spanish centre half. Comfortable on the ball, brings it into midfield often, mobile enough to fill in down the channels. I wasn't watching that closely as we weren't linked with him at the time but I can spot a proper shitehawk, trust me :D

It just hasn't worked so far. There were a couple of bits of defending last week that were pretty good but it kind of doesn't matter if you've given one away, nearly got your captain sent off and should have given another away, all under no pressure.

Not sure the Laporte example is strictly true. Plus signed in January deadline day much different and they did already have 4 CBs. (He played 2/3s of the PL games that season in a team that rotates aswell). But that’s irrelevant really to wolves.

We didn’t need to sign and English CB. We Just didn’t need to sign one whose weak aerially and in the challenge (he’s shit at everything else too btw). They also didn’t need to come in and play all the time, they just needed to come in and be trusted.

The Dias links were bollocks (if not stupid if the club actually thought he’d come). But let’s say we signed the 80% Dias. I can’t list names as I’m not an international scout. But let’s say a CB from Italy, Germany or France for £20m. They could have easily been an upgrade on Bennett or worst case scenario develop into one but comfortably step in for the EL, Cup and for injuries.

Well I was using it as a stick to beat him (and our recruitment) with. How with 2 defenders injured Id rather play an untested Kilman or Saiss and Donk.

He did look OK. But not an improvement on Ryan.

Our recruitment in the summer was poor to only go in with 3 quality players at the back.

We may not pay £40m for Dunk but I'm pretty sure had we spent that kind of money we'd have picked up a bit of absolute quality.

To think for €54m we could've had a world class CB from Benfica ;)

Vallejo came with decent credentials, Eintract Frankfurt fans thought he was amazing

On paper it was the perfect cover, you can't say his signing wasn't researched or done properly.

He might still come good for us, players don't become rubbish overnight

I think Badiashile was the one we really wanted, but for whatever reason it didn't happen.

If we REALLY wanted Dias, we should have offered the £56m. With his agent (I think but haven't checked so strike me down if he isn't a Mendes player) and a decent wage offer I would have expected us to have stood a good chance of turning his head. However we didn't offer the level to make Benfica definitely play ball, so nothing happened. And I genuinely think FFP issues were the reason why. It is a huge sum for a team in the second top flight season to fling about when we had already spent £32m on Raul. And from that I again point you toward the Macquirie factoring and attempts to get new minority investors on board. That has to be to get the transfer budget up by chunks without FFP issues, especially as we have to behave against the UEFA rules while in the Europa League.

Could be b/s but I’ve just been told Boly has broken his ankle.

Just heard Havard Flo is set to sign from Werder Bremen. £1m.

Plenty of rumours on Twitter last week that Boly had had a bust up with Nuno and wasn't on the team bus
