Did jury service as an 18 year old, looking back i don't think I was mature enough to understand the ins and outs of one the cases (chosen for 2).

Delighted at the time though as work said I wasn't going to get paid, and got paid twice.
As an apprentice at the time on 105 quid a week, it was very welcome.

Funnily enough kept my first wage slip for posterity after finishing the apprenticeship. Seemed massive by comparison and felt absolutely minted on a mighty £2.98 per hour!

I was 14 though, proper graft.

£1 an hour YTS in 1988, which was uplifted from £35 a week to £40 as the college had agreed that travel costs should be added on top. The £5 didn’t cover my bus fares, even though I was able to get on for a child.

I think a recommendation has gone in to make it the defendants choice to have a trial v a jury or just the judge.

You can do that over here but I don’t think it’s generally seen as a smart move. I guess people think there’s something to not putting the verdict in the hands of one person (no matter how qualified)?

Started on 60 a week in 89, then got about 45/50 quid raise for following 3 years.

For many years in this country factories closed for specific dates for holidays, usually 2 weeks in July/August, 1 week in the Autumn, 1 week end of May and around a week at Christmas. Not sure anyone still does this nowadays, 90s was my last time.
