Cost controlled yes man I agree with, I don't agree that they consciously expected regression though. A combination of Jeff's hubris and an over reliance on Mendes is why that happened. When it started to become clear that the squad was too weak they opened the cheque book but with the majority of the spend going in Mendes' direction. That investment saw no improvement so he got binned

Lage was a huge gamble. They hoped he’d reproduce his early form at Benfica and it was clear by May his later form there was far more representative. I doubt we’ll ever know if blind faith or the lack of an acceptable alternative was why he survived as long as he did. Just glad we can move on and hope lessons have been learned.

It seems the conspiracy theorists (that includes me) were 100% accurate in the assessment that Bruno was a dead man walking on the day we appointed him.

Lage was kind of a better Walter Zenga in a way (sort of), someone to look after the project until the right man became available. Lopetegui is a Mendes man so perhaps Mendes gave the heads up he was getting the boot from Sevilla, hence our Lage sacking timing.

I don't think we've sacked Lage as Lopetegui has become available. We've sacked him because we're 18th and play rubbish football. It's just aligned nicely that Lopetegui is now available.

As Dan says, if we're 10th we don't sack Lage
