New Laptop Required

My last laptop was custom built and bought from pcspecialist, though if you're in the US I don't know who is a decent custom build website.

Dan is right. Anything over 16GB of RAM is overkill. If you don't need a graphics card for games then onboard graphics is fine nowadays and still half decent. You should be spending your money on 3 things IMO - Screen, processor and storage.

Your budget would likely get a 15 inch UHD screen, a fast i7 or i9 processor and a 1TB Nvme drive for the OS. I have an Nvme in my PC and they're brilliant and lightning quick.

Nothing wrong with the Android phone itself, I quite liked it (barring the bizarre fact you could only set up to eight different alarm times in the clock), it was the Google account that fucked me up.
 
@Tredman Just north of a £1,100, an i7 processor, 16GB DDR4, 1TB SSD on top of the OS SSD, even comes with a GPU you may or may not use,

I would re-emphasize that Intel’s mobile chips really should be avoided until they bring the Alder Lake architecture to laptops (which will be later this year and come with a big premium, most likely).

I got a desktop from PC Specialist about a year ago. They were very good.

They are very power-inefficient, prone to overheating, and are generally less performant than AMD's competition at this time.

Essentially, if you go with an Intel machine you will likely:
  1. Pay more
  2. Get less performance
  3. Experience more issues related to thermals

AMD notoriously run hotter than Intel. And a sufficient cooler with thermal paste should easily get rid of any overheating issues.

And you pay more because Intel are better than AMD.

My last three were from there, and the girls’ laptop and my dad’s PC. I’ve used them for years, top notch company.

This was the case before Zen 2, it is no longer true.

The difference matters less in a desktop but I was under the impression that Tredders needs something more transportable. Could be wrong.
 
interesting discussion, it s a little bit moot as I can’t find any slim and light AMD laptops with 16gb RAM.

I’d actually quite like a surface laptop 4 with amd but they all seem to the low spec ones.
 
That's a shame. Not the case in the US but I know different regions get different specs and all that so it's not unheard of.

In fairness the Intel chips aren't bad, AMD just really hit it out of the park with the Zen architecture. And Intel appears to have done well with their Alder Lake architecture (though, again, unfortunately that's going to come with a premium since it's a first-gen platform).
 
I got a Dell XPS 13 9310 in the end (nice specs - i7, 16gb & 512gb), partly because it looks ace but mostly as it was easy and arrived next day with on-site warranty.

Just had a look at the full spec. That's very expensive for just a 13in screen and 512GB SSD. I guess it's not your money though.
 
Yep, got 20% discount tho too.

Edit just a 13" screen is an odd thing to say, larger screen doesn't mean better laptop..
