Exceptionally kind of you, sir - but I am collecting one this weekend from a mate who has been cajoling me into learning for years!

I did tell him not to expect a Jack Bruce-esque output for a wee while, though.
 
I've played one for 40 years now (on and off) It can be as simple and as hard as you want it to be, the one thing I will say is don't be put off by some of the people you see playing on Youtube, some of them are on a different planet.
 
And while were here this is the latest build, based on a Telecaster Thinline hollow body.

Maple neck, Ash body, gold top paint job with the rest of the guitar done in Oil and lacquer .
Gotoh machine heads, DiMarzio PAF pickup in the neck and a Seymour Duncan in the bridge, took a year in all as and when I had time.

ps. the stainless steel pick behind the control plate is there because some dick (naming no names) dropped a screwdriver on it why the top coat of paint was curing.

Bass is fairly simple to play. The main difference I found (as I have smallish hands) is the increased distance between frets. Takes a little while to get used to stretching your fingers or moving your hand up and down the neck a bit more.

And yeah like DDW says it's all about octaves and scales. Learn the major, minor and pentatonic scales and you can do pretty much everything including walking bass lines straight off the bat.

Seeing this thread back near the top reminds me it is ages since I picked my guitars up. Wouldn’t want to do an hours practice today though, I would lose about a stone!
 
I've just hung a load of washing out, watered the grass seed, washed up and emptied the bin and I need another shower. It's bloody boiling!
 
Just read back from page 1 and it's good to see I was true to my word and bought another Dean ML (plus a Dean acoustic, and a Dean Razorback V, and a Fender Tele HH).

Yeah - thought it wise to get a bass amp rather than ruin a standard one!

Started some tutorials on YouTube which seem to be very useful. My fingers hurt a lot but it's good pain! (Fnarr)
 
Trying to think of simple but fun basslines.

Lithium by Nirvana was a good one I learnt many moons ago. Another One Bites The Dust and How Many More Times by Led Zep.
 
Yeah I've learned Another One Bites the Dust. Ta for the other suggestions - will check them out!
