You will definitely need to learn scales and understand where all your octaves are etc, but crucially you will need great rhythm, as good bassists tend to play in-between the notes, usually following the drummers bass drum beat, or playing counter rhythms to flesh out the bars where a guitarist may be only playing chords.
I have EXCEPTIONAL natural rhythm.....
