I've been reading the opening pages of this thread. Wow, what a weird take to have had in the promotion year...

I'd have agreed, he'd have Been one of the first I'd have wanted upgrading going in to the PL but he was very good in Nuno's first season, the vitriol aimed at him was OTT and a little embarrassing.

I would never have predicted how effective a wingback he'd become over the next three years, outside of the elite players he was as good as anyone when playing to his strengths. A WB not a FB.

We spent over £20m "upgrading" him with Semedo. With the benefit of hindsight, it was an awful piece of business selling a player at his peak key to the way we played (I know we attempted a new system, terribly executed) and replaced him for a loss of over £5m with an inferior player!

I for one welcome Doc home, am no more worried about him at RB than Semedo, although recognise he's a better WB.

Anyone dissecting his post Celtic interview is just nitpicking in my opinion. He doesn't interview well and comes across as surly no matter the circumstances.

I just don't buy that Semedo is an inferior player. Doc was already on the wane when we sold him for good money. Defensively he is and always has been a bombscare, did great in an unusual position for a few seasons.
Semedo has been disappointing from an attacking pov but even allowing for his occasional brainfarts is a much superior defender. I'm not as anti Doc as most on here but he's past his best and in an already glacial defence will struggle. I think JL wants to play 4 at the back but also get his FBs forward, Doc has never been good at getting back into position.
If Doc plays regularly and turns out be competent, I'll gladly eat humble pie.

More MM ignore button candidates telling people what to think.

Hopefully this place doesn't turn into that cesspit

I'd argue Semedo has never had as good a season as Doc's last one with us - and that wasn't his best one.

The problem is Doherty’s best season was in a very bespoke role in a formation we don’t play. In a back four he simply isn’t good at all.

Whatever we think about Doherty, Spurs thought enough about him to spend £15 million on him.
Then Inter Milan liked him enough, even though that was on a free, so I think he's still got enough about him to do a job for us.
Not great but he's slotting into a not great team. He can do ok.
I think a lot of criticism of him is way over the top.

Spurs...Mendes...Mourinho.

He went to Atletico and played 18 mins. Mendes link

Comes back to Wolves. Mendes Link.

Having Mendes as your agent opens doors.

I'd like to know what attributes he has now as a right back that make him different to when he struggled to get into our side at championship or league one level.

13-14 (L1) - 18
14-15 (CH) - 33
15-16 (CH) - 34
16-17 (CH) - 42

Unless you're going back 10 years to when we were in L1, he didn't struggle too much to get in the team as a LB or RB?

He won player of the season in one of those seasons too.

In the Match Day programme, Doherty is interviewed and has a large quote...
"I've worked with some of the best managers on the planet, so if you can't improve with them, then you're never going to improve!"
I can see those words coming back to take a big chunk out of his arse.

Mikey and Lee on comms against Porto gave us all the cliches. Knows the club. Has gone off to play for different managers to add more to his game. He's very experienced. He's got a great character for the dressing room. He brings goals. Even said he has a massive to win and hates losing.

He started 60% or less games in 14-15 and 15-16 although I'll grant you he was pretty much ever present in 16-17. I hope he's a success for us but I have grave concerns at his ability to perform as a Premier League full back. If we were still playing 3 at the back then he'd be a low risk signing but we're not.

Not if you think Semedo's best season (21/22) was better than Doc (19/20).
Don't get me wrong, I'm no Semedo fanboi, I realise his limitations, I just think Doc is a really poor fit for where we are now and at RB I'd choose Semedo over him every time.
