Live Match Discussion 2024/25

Old old old ground but a) we were 6th after 10 games when Raul got injured (only 4 points off the top of the league) and b) if you decide his race is run then that is your prerogative and I kind of get it to an extent, but the replacement was an absolute fucking disgrace and made us look completely unserious as a football club
Agree with you but all history and nothing changes it. I don't buy into the "everything Fosun does is bad" agenda though. Like or loathe what they have done, they have also made possible some real fun times over their reign. Sure they've completely messed up in several areas several times but they have usually seen the error of their ways and made changes. They have also invested and as we both know, some fans will never be satisfied with what they have spent.

It's a poisoned chalice sometimes... blow a wad because football people tell you to sign the next generational talent and then get slaughtered when it doesn't work out and then get next to no credit when you sign a couple of the best ever players to wear an Old Gold shirt. Opinions eh?

Rui saves Deeneys pen.
Yeah...perhaps... but we shouldn't have been in that position and if Nuno hadn't made those substitutions to remove our attacking options, then we wouldn't have been. It's still a very bad memory but not as bad as Leeds in the early 70's.

Thing is he wasn't ever a generational talent and that was obvious after one League Cup game vs Stoke. He will make a reasonable enough career (will annoy fans of every single club he plays for) but that fee in that situation while selling one of our best players to fund it was nonsense.

It was a quid pro quo for Uncle Jorge and we all know it. Thing is we can absorb that, it's a ridiculous situation but fine. What we can't do is appoint his coneboy mate as a manager because that instantly turns us from a top half team to a load of shite instantly.

Yep very old ground but if in May 2021 you put Nuno CV next to Lage’s and think yep I’ll go with the latter then I’m not sure it is you’re looking for.
It's very fair comment. Lage's first three games were great to watch even though we lost and frankly, they were a huge change in style as we sought to take the game to the opposition. Confidence is everything and if we hadn't lost 1-0 in each, then who knows?

The bigger mistake for me was coveting Lope and then screwing him over with a pack of lies about future investment into the squad.

Don’t think we need to do this again but the timeline from May 2021 to now is catalogue of mistakes and managed decline.
Twice in 3 seasons they’ve had to urgently reverse their managerial stance and have been extremely fortunate that one had a World Cup reset button and the other has involved 3 very poor promoted sides.

Also on both occasions have released funds that previously weren't there to avoid a probable relegation. It shows what the ambition is, it's not what The Accountant posted, it is to stay the PL, but being in it is all they want

To you and me after seeing him play, we instantly knew he wasn't up to Prem standards. However, Fosun were prepared to listen to football people and back their judgment.

I know you like to harp on about the fee but frankly, it was their money to do with as they wished. Before Fosun came along, we have never been able to compete adequately in the Prem and have always got relegated. Perhaps we might have been relegated this season if things continued under GON but they have at least guaranteed we will stay up this term. I'd still like one more victory mind.

As for Uncle Jorge, well, lessons have to be learned. After spending so much on Silva and seeing the results, naturally there were some questions... but then look at our signings and how we performed when we turned elsewhere. Frankly, I'd rather have Jorge in our camp than not because he does have some very good footballers on his books.

I get your point about manager's but it is very difficult to come into the Prem and immediately get a poor team flying. Lage went about things in the wrong way with attempting a clear out and destroying everything Nuno had built so there will always be criticism for that, but like the Nuno era, it is now history and we can only hope with the latest appointment that Fosun have learned their lessons.

Certainly looks that way and 10 years ago, most of us would have took surviving in the Prem for 7 seasons as a way of life.

This is the thing hiding behind PSR when you’ve opened the cheque book twice in desperation is a bit like hiding behind a curtain with your legs sticking out.

Think Athletic Bilbao has a strong British connection in its founding hence the English version of Athletic as opposed to atletico.
Lots of links to the dockyard migrants from Sunderland and Southampton also why they play in red and white.

And a strong link to Wolverhampton. El bombin!!

Haaland having a stinker again. Misses his 3rd penalty of the season and then a 1 v 1. Even the pens he scores aren’t convincing. No ides why he’s still on them with the other players they have in the squad.
