Live Match Discussion: 2020/21

Watching MLS right now and it's absolutely shocking how much smoother and more accurate our video review is than in the Prem.

I watched some of that during the original lockdown when it was the only footy still running, and I didn't mind it. Pace is a tad slow at times but it wasn't unwatchable.

Pre VAR, Michael Oliver is the best referee in the PL, now he's a bit of a joke as he's the worst for interpretation without nuance. Kavanagh gives that red because Oliver has told him to look at the screen, he could have said it's bollocks, he should have, but when the number 1 ref tells you to give a red that's tough.

Last year, it was said VAR was bad because refs didn't get to look at screens themselves as they understand the ebb and flow of the game they were managing. This year they do and it's worse. It just needs binning in the PL, Riley and his mob have ruined the game

Marriner looked at the screen for one and told the VAR to do one. People dislike him on here but he’s the best ref by a margin. Let’s the game flow, let’s contact hsppen and doesn’t fall for diving, cheating and whining.

Atkinson refs the game in a similar way but he’s been making mistakes and gone off the boil. Probably needs to retire. But sadly the new guys (Coote, Banks et al) are fucking useless

When assessing a foul using slow motion is ridiculous, everything looks ten times worse. Watch Balbuena's challenge in real time and it's fine.

My view is that refs have been told to ignore intent and context this season and instead to make decisions on what's actually happened, regardless of why.

The handball rule, the offside rule, the decisions we've seen I think back this up. Refs using their better judgement / experience has largely been rendered irrelevant

But then RAN doesn’t get sent off for being reckless and dangerous.

He obviously hasn’t meant to do him, but his action was deliberate (as in he was in control of his body parts) whereas Balbuena was just kicking a ball and Chillwell got in the way

Agreed, watch me do star jumps in my pants in slow motion, case rested :)

Good point, there's probably examples supporting both ways of thinking
