Live Match Discussion 2018/19

Don't think it hit his arm personally. There certainly wasn't enough evidence to overturn it. Nothing conclusive.

Oh and Sterling should win Player of the Year. Amazing season, a standout even in that team.

Fair enough - but would you get a penalty for that if he was a defender? Arm isn't sticking out anywhere. I doubt you would.

It's definitely flicked his arm on to his hip but not hand ball imo. He can't get out of the way, ball has come over heads and he's turned his body into it with his hand tucked in. Referee got it spot on.

I thought the new directive was that if it hits the arm at all before going in they disallow? Essentially after what happened with Boly earlier this season.

Is that FA, PL or UEFA's directive though...

I think from next season any goal scored with the arm is disallowed. At the moment a goal scored via the hand/arm that is not seen as deliberate stands. The PL refs group got bollocked this season after Boly scored v Man City and it came out that the refs were told to disallow any goal scored via handball.

Don’t see how that can be disallowed, his arm is alongside his body so it’s not like it made a difference even though it did brush it , completely different to the Boly one.

Yeah they showed that angle once on TV just after the goal and before VAR started looking at it, and I was then surprised it was never shown to the ref. That said, when I saw it and the front in angle of the body, the arm was practically in front of the torso and therefore it looked a valid goal to me. Literally no where else for the arm to go and he has tucked it in as much as is possible.

I think the winning none goal sums up VAR for me. On the one hand it killed the most dramatic of finishes with players and fans going potty, on the other it came up with the correct decision. I can see the argument both ways, but personally on balance I'd rather not kill that immediate drama even if that means less decisions are technically correct.

I think its great in the main. Correct calls to ensure no howlers. I agree though, that it is going to be used more than that. I thought it added to last nights epic drama.

However how shit were two " world class" keepers last night? Ederson with spurs first was just awful. Lloris did the same thing for the 2 2. If Ruddy or Rui had made those errors they would have been entered onto the blame thread instantly!

I wouldn't blame Ederson for Spurs' first last night, he's moving across to his right because Laporte's shit attempt at an interception and Son puts it the other side of him to make life difficult. I think Ederson does pretty well to get his leg up/across to it and is perhaps a little unfortunate not to keep it out in the end.

I agree.

The correct decision was made on the offside, the problem is if you're a City fan there going mental thinking you have scored a last minute goal to get through to the semi final, the feeling must be the absolute worst. It's a system in it's early stages but the more this happens you'll get fans not quite sure whether or not to celebrate until the ref has ran over to the touchline and had a 2 minute look at the incident, with the fans not really knowing what is going on in that time.

From the evidence so far it is also still making controversial decisions on borderline offsides and handballs and the like - and this becomes the main talking point after games. Look at Llorente's goal, in the studio they couldn't agree, on message boards it was split - the angles it was shown at on the VAR replays were not conclusive so you've ended up in a situation where the ref has just had to make a judgement call anyway, meanwhile the Spurs fans haven't got a a fucking clue whether they've scored or not.

It's ok when you are watching on TV and you can hear whats going on - for the fan in the stadium it's a nightmare. Not a fan.

I get that it’s harsh on the fans who go mental only to have it taken away but look at it from the other side - the spurs players and fans were utterly despondent, beaten at the last second like we were the other week only to find out it’s disallowed and be able to celebrate just as wildly. IMO that is just as good a feeling.

Oh and also it’s the right decision.

That's exactly right. Imagine if the Watford penalty had been overturned by VAR- we'd have gone fucking bonkers.

I just think if you score a few goals that get reviewed and taken away - it will affect how you feel you can celebrate them in future and takes some of the raw emotion of it away - as you'll always have that feeling that the decision might be reversed. I'd personally rather be on the wrong end of a few bad decisions a season than go to games not being able to get caught up in the euphoria of scoring an important goal.
