I didn't expect that. Having had a reprieve I expected Celtic to take advantage of it.

Maribor are very poor and will be fortunate to get a point in the group stage. Celtic are worse, they didn't get panned 6-1 on aggregate by Legia Warsaw by accident - bear in mind Poland have gone about 15 years without having anyone qualify for the Champions League.

It is not as if MK Dons do not deserve it. They have harried and hassled Manchester United, and have often been first to the 50/50 balls.

When Steve Claridge can see why a system is a disaster, then you REALLY have problems. You need EXCEPTIONAL wing backs who need to be getting forward and tracking back well, or it is just simply 5-3-2 and the forwards are totally isolated.

It's a system fraught with issues unless you have very specific players to fit it.

You need at least two of your centre halves to be very comfortable on the ball, United do not have that.
You need at least two of your centre halves to be extremely mobile, United do not have that.
It is very difficult to balance a midfield properly in that formation, United are severely deficient in there and have been for years.
The front two need to be adept at dropping deep and linking play, neither Rooney nor Van Persie do that any more and Hernandez has always been a pure poacher. Welbeck has some of the attributes but lacks quality.

Without even considering the wingbacks, which often leaves you in a halfway house of sticking a winger in defensive areas where he has no clue (cf Ashley Young on the opening day) or career fullbacks with all the onus on them providing all the width and as a result looking clueless.

Terrible, terrible formation for 95%+ of teams. Stupid to even consider it.
