As Dan says, they've missed Modric fiercely. Khedira, Kroos, and Isco are all wonderful players but none of them really do the "dirty work" that Modric does. Personally I think that's unforgivable in a professional footballer but it seems to have been ingrained in the culture of the sport that some players just won't do it and there's nothing you can do about it.
Since when was Modric a player who did the dirty work? He's got plenty of workrate but he's hardly the sort of player who's going to be a real presence when you're out of possession.
He's certainly not a "snotter" but he certainly goes in for tackles and harries the opposition in a way that the rest of Madrid's midfielders do not. He's more of a pressurizer than a real ball-winner but the role is still hugely important in that team.
