Its the most naive stance in politics to think that governments have a pile of money and can only do one thing or another. Its possible to spend money on defence and also spend on welfare. Or spend on just defence. Or just welfare. Or neither.

Its ridiculous to react to (entirely justifiable) increases in defence spending with 'bUt wHAt aBOut tEh chilDREn???'

Institutions love gilts as they're the lowest risk investment. The govt isn't really borrowing at all. It's like a huge savings bank really. The debt thing is used to make us think we're broke.
