Just how good were/was/is/are....

Solid AAR reference.

About the only thing in this thread I can relate to so far.

That's not mentioned in polite society, mate

Murders in the Rue Morgue was my favorite but as with Def Leppard the early 80's recordings had a naivety and innocence to them , take Whitesnake one of the best bands out there until the Yank producers got hold of them !

Fear of the Dark was okay but everything after that is just meh central and that is with my kind head on. The Blayze Bayley years were absolute dreck.

I remember Wolfsbanes first ever gig, he was an insufferable prick not popular on the local scene when they were just a local band he became a phenomenal wanker
once heh got wider fame

First two Def Leppard albums were great. Photograph is a sensational song.

I loved the early eighties. Bon Scott AC/DC was still pretty current (another band where you can definitely say amazing and then shit after Back in Black), thrash was being born, Venom seemed something ace rather than a joke, Saxon were in their pomp. Motorhead were Gods. Maiden appearing on Tiswas and then TOTP having to play the video for Run to the Hills even though the DJs were clearly unhappy about this nasty noise. Hell, even Rainbow and the Scorpions were good then. Happy times. A musical sweet spot for me.

When punk came out I hated it....bought in to the idea that none of them could play, obviously when I actually listened to it properly, it turned out most of it was catchy 3 minute pop songs with a bit of snarly attitude and I liked it. Really like Never Mind The Bollocks, the mistake they made was sacking Glen Matlock for being too boring....trouble was he wrote all the songs

My better half got me a fantastic print for Christmas linking all the most influential bands together, and the chain of that influence for the alternative music scene. The Pistols are - quite rightly - one of the biggest names on it, along with Joy Division, The Smiths and the Ramones.

edit - found an image of it - it sits on the wall above our telly. I love it.

Joy division were a direct result of the lesser free trade hall gig, Hooky and Barnie were there and formed Joy Division up on leaving, Morrisey was there too, so that just leaves Ramones :eek:p Love that chart

At least they brought Matlock back!! Sid - now he REALLY couldn't play, although his version of My Way is a thing of hilarity and joy.

Some good bands on there - Black Flag, Misfits, Danzig, Runaways in one area of the page and I love those bands.

Weirdly I've never been that keen on Maiden even though I'm a classic rock fan and I like some NWOBHM. Preferred D'Ianno's voice although Dickinson obviously has a beast of a vocal range

Piece of Mind is in my top five albums of all time for sure. But I can understand people who aren't into Maiden's output. So much of it is written by Steve Harris rather than a two or three or more writing conglomerate like say Lennon / McCartney or Hetfield / Ulrich so it is sort of bound to go down the same writing roads. I think that is why they became so damn samey after Fear of the Dark. Harris almost had nothing different to say.

I didnt actually mind Sid's c'mon everybody, but as much as he tried, and he DID try, he couldnt play an instrument for shit

My school mate Frazer Toplis back in the day was an abomination on the bass. His version of Silver Machine would have been beyond Sid's powers. Which is scary as Frazer cunningly combined a complete lack of finger dexterity with no sense of rhythm in the way that no bass player should, even if he thought he was Cliff Burton!

Sid was THAT bad.

If we're talking about quirky, entertaining performers then we should mention Alex Harvey (SAHB)

Another one who hasn't heard of Boards of Canada and I listen to a LOT of music!

I will give them a go though. Electronica isn't my thing really but you never know until you try.
