Just how good were/was/is/are....

As an aside a guitarist magazine were once doing an interview with Dave Gilmore , he allowed the reporter to try his setup, he sounded nothing like Dave Gilmour :)

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most 2 most expensive guitars ever bought at auction are Gilmours White strat serial number 0001, which held the record, for a few hours, until The Black Strat was sold, smashing the amount paid for Strat No1.

He auctioned off almost his entire collection for charity and raised $21m. I saw him playing a couple of weeks ago, the Gilmour clan has been doing casts called ' The Von Trapped Family' playing covers, i watched him doing some Leonard Cohen numbers. He doesnt look quite right these days, I don't know if he has some kind of health issue that was behind selling off his treasured possessions for a good cause but it looks like he may not now play any arena/stadium style gigs again . :(

Johnny Marr doesn't know how Johnny Marr does what he does.

I will do The Smiths at some point. Not for a while yet though.

If you want a proper singer listen to Amy Lee of Evanescence. Now that's a voice.

That's hilarious. I can only think you're tone deaf.

I'm with the majority on Fleetwood Mac. Outstanding stuff and Rumours is one of the best records of all time.

Yeah, totally unable to carry a tune.....

Stevie Nicks' nasal droning :icon_lol:

Only one of the greatest female vocalists there's ever been.

Whoa there, she's good but she's not great. She's not fit to clean Karen Carpenter's mic, par exemple.

Any Fleetwood Mac is good stuff, but Rumours is an absolute all-timer of a record.

I think hes being a bit disingenuous on that one. Jaguars are pretty complicated to set up, and he's not like Gallagher who couldnt tell a 5th minor augmented froma G, he knows what he's doing technically. One of Mark Ronsons prized possessions is a Marr signature Jag and he can't get it to sound anywhere close to Johnny's tone.
Billy Duffy from the Cult pointed out something the other night I'd not noticed before. He said he wast sure what him and Johnny Marr were channelling at the time, but his guitar riff for this sounds awfully similar to What Difference Does It Make.

I did you the service of actually listening to that video. Thank you for proving the nasal whining point so perfectly [emoji23][emoji23]

She sounds like a supertramp backing singer on that, even worse than normal!
There is no accounting for taste. I am clearly in the minority with Her and FM

Amy Lee is a great example of what computers in a recording studio can do. Live her voice is shit.

I can confirm that sounding like Gilmour is pretty fucking hard. I don’t own a strat so I put it on the neck pickup of my ESP custom, flick the coil tap and plug it into my Marshall on full whack but with the gain right down and on the crunch channel with a load of reverb and a bit of delay. Sounds good but it isn’t Gilmour!

Knopfler is another one whose tone is really hard to get right, as is Dimebag.

You're very odd! She has an incredible voice. I get that there's no accounting for taste, but to say she can't carry a tune is just wrong.

Despite the great tunes - I can't listen to too much Stevie Nicks at a time for much the same reason I can't listen to Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics. It grinds. Alternatively, I could listen to somebody like Hope Sandoval or Limahal - even if they were repeating over and over again ' Humpty Dumpty ' or ' Yellow Submarine '.

Yeah, Knopflers another one who gets a load of his tone and distinctive sound/style straight from from his fingers. You could pick up a hundred strats and never get close to his early tone. Have you ever seen him play Money For Nothing on his own? It's almost like a Banjo riff, it's very bluegrass

3. The Cranberries

The Cranberries were an Irish rock band formed in Limerick, Ireland in 1989 by lead singer Niall Quinn, guitarist Noel Hogan, bassist Mike Hogan, and drummer Fergal Lawler. Quinn was replaced as lead singer by Dolores O'Riordan in 1990. The band officially classify themselves as an alternative rock group, but incorporate aspects of indie pop, post-punk, folk rock and pop rock into their sound.

The Cranberries rose to international fame in the 1990s with their debut album Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, which became a commercial success, and achieved five top 20 albums on the Billboard 200 chart : Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can't We?, No Need to Argue, To the Faithful Departed, Bury the Hatchet and Stars: The Best of 1992-2002 as well as having eight top 20 singles on the Modern Rock Tracks chart : "Linger", "Dreams", "Zombie", "Ode to My Family", "Ridiculous Thoughts", "Salvation", "Free to Decide", and "Promises". Their fifth studio album Wake Up and Smell the Coffee was released in October 2001.

In early 2009, after a six-year hiatus, the Cranberries reunited and began a North American tour followed by shows in Latin America and Europe. The band recorded their sixth album Roses in May 2011, and released it in February 2012. Something Else, an album covering many of the band's most popular songs along with new orchestral accompaniments provided by the Irish Chamber Orchestra, was released in April 2017. The album also included three new songs: "The Glory", "Rupture" and "Why?.

On 15 January 2018, lead singer Dolores O'Riordan was found dead of drowning in a London hotel room. She had recently arrived in London for a studio mixing session on her D.A.R.K. album and to discuss the band's latest album with record label BMG. The Cranberries confirmed in September 2018 that they would not continue as a band, releasing their final album In the End in April 2019 and disbanding afterward. Noel Hogan stated: "the Cranberries was the four of us. We don’t want to do this without Dolores. So we’re going to leave it after this."

The Cranberries have sold over 40 million albums worldwide as of 2018. The band ranks as one of the best-selling alternative acts of the '90s which garnered them an MTV Europe Music Award, a World Music Award, an International Group nomination at Brit Awards, a Juno nomination and a Juno Award win. The band was nominated for the Ivor Novello Awards and received an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement. In 1998 they performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. In 2016, they received a BMI Award with a Special Citation of Achievement. In The End earned them a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album.

Cranberries. Awesome sound. Unique. Dolores is sadly missed. 46 was no age. I can listen to her and Florence (of the machine fame) any time.

Knopfler is a great musician. Can't sing though. Sounds like he's gargling soup!

I like the Cranberries but they're one of those bands I really don't know enough about. I remember really enjoying To The Faithful Departed when that was released in the late 90's. And of course, Dreams, Linger and Zombie are absolute tunes. My stepdaughter's band played Zombie at her school's Christmas concert last year which was really cool. I helped her practise!

One of those I need to research a bit more - to Spotify!

You won't regret it. Absolutely fantastic back catalogue.

This is lovely:

I miss Dolores :(

Florence (of the machine fame)

Can't abide Stevie Nicks' voice but likes Florence....

That is like dismissing Raul Jimenez in favour of Havard Flo.
