Just how good were/was/is/are....

It is weird how Weller just totally ditched the other two. Fine if he felt the band had come to its natural end (I can take or leave The Style Council, some of it works and some of it really really doesn't) but there was no fall out as such, he simply completely stopped talking to them. Who does that?

I think a lot of that may have been down to his dad. Kind of "You write all the songs, what do they do? You'd be better off on your own". The fact that it was John Weller who called the band meeting and made the announcement might enforce that thought. But, as you said, to refuse to talk to them after the split just drove the wedge deeper, it really pissed Bruce and Rick off, that's for sure.

If it hadn't been for the chance meeting back stage of a Who concert they still might not be talking. Bruce has worked with Weller since on one of his albums

Might have to start sticking to da rulez (ie someone gets nominated/volunteers) because this is becoming a bit of a mess.

my fault, sorry, i needed to fill a morning so i gave it a shot, I'd missed that original rule

Nah man, everyone was doing it (and tbf there wasn't really an ongoing discussion to any great extent then).

Just it isn't going to work if a post goes up and within 2-3 further posts another artist gets mentioned which is what was starting to happen. Should be pretty clear when something has run its course.

I might try and set one option up on a word doc, and wait for an opportune moment to post it.

Yeah everyone just needs to stick to to DW's orig idea, take the time to read the op's piece, listen to the tracks and then show them the courtesy their effort deserves of posting an opinion even if it's just 'still think theyre shit ' :icon_lol: Maybe one a day DW, something like that?

Yeah, sounds about right. Give everyone a chance to contribute and then move on.

It’ll take an age to write my first one, pretty obvious who it will be but the masses need educating.

I took a good hour and a bit setting the Jam one up and it is worth taking the time and doing it properly

Eton Rifles is still a terrific song.

The Jam were/are my favourite band of all time, A true working class band not formed out of art school. I saw them several times, their following was fanatical back in the day, it got a bit annoying once the Mod thing took off and everybody was 'in to them' tbh.
For a period they were the biggest band in the country, first to go straight in to No. 1 since Slade (with Going Underground - aided by some clever marketing I might add).
Cool dressers as well imo - particularly Weller.
I have everything they ever did, have most of TSC stuff as well (some good - some not so good) , plus most of Weller's solo stuff.
Weller could look after himself in his younger days (his dad boxed and encouraged him in 'the noble art') there is talk of him giving Foxton a black eye after a fight in the back of their van and also him hitting Sid Vicious over the head with a bottle.
He seems to make a habit of dissing people he once relied on, Buckler, Foxton, Steve White, Paolo Hewitt, numerous women. His other trait is plagiarism, (although I'd argue that he's taken bits of others songs, made new songs from them and actually improved them) I Still love his music though. Saw him in Dublin last year, brilliant gig with his 'band' Craddock, Pilgrim etc.
One criticism that can't be levelled at him is that he's lazy, he is always working and always evolving.
I digress - This isn't about Weller. The Jam were Paul, Bruce and Rick. The Woking Wondermen as Gary Crowley had it.

Weller just stands apart from many purely for his lyrics. Never could work out whether I preferred Jam or Style Council. Bitterest Pill for me but Town Called Malice is seminal. My generation gets a profound understanding of Mod from the man, simple as that - but maybe I was more Rocker. Shout to the Top is simply majestic - lucky to have seen him perform it live and he smashed it. I cannot for the life of me understand how Weller rates Oasis so highly - my only negative on the man.

great Jam write up
for me rifles, start, entertainment, tube station, bitterest pill - just fantastic and now classic tracks any band would be proud of
i'm no so fussed with too much else they did and other than a couple style councils i'd never choose to listen to weller's other stuff

i can remember in my youth learning all the words to tube station and blasting it out many times since on pissed nights with possibly the world's worst voice
what a great track

You dont seriously believe everything Lydon said?. he went round slagging Floyd in the day whilst secretly loving them.

He's a smart guy, totally reliable as an inspiration but a recent thing he did with Henry Rollins, Duff and the Ramone fella that's left was embarrassing for him. Always a cultural icon but I would say consistent with provokation rather than reaction.

You don't mess around with Henry Rollins, three or four of my favourite YouTube videos are of him, he talks an awful lot of sense.

Can honestly say I've never listened to a Rollins tune.
