January 2022 Transfer Thread

We were definitely in for him. All of the reliable (if there’s such a thing) journalists at the time said as much and didn’t the club* comment on him being injured as a reason for us not getting the deal over the line?

*it may have eventually been reported by Spiers but why would he lie?

The club definitely leaked the link the evening before the deadline closed and definitely leaked the additional period of injury on the day. You can only guess whether the second was always going to follow the first

Locadia
Zinchenko
Abraham
Sanches

Not to say any of these would have been good signings (in fact I think at least two of them would have been awful) but they're all players we've had and then not had. It's a pattern.

All fell apart for differing reasons though I think? PSV supposedly ramped up the price for Locadia last minute, Zinchenko decided to stay and fight for his place which actually turned out a good move for him that season and Sanches was Wolves' call to pull the plug.

The consistent theme is they all fell apart at the end of the window. Always trying to be clever

Yeah, but there's only so many times it happens and you go "ah, ok". Eventually you think "this is what Wolves do".

Just seems like sniping for the sake of it to me.

Things go wrong sometimes, none of those deals went south with the same failing as far as I can see so to me the pattern doesn't run very deep. The only thing you could maybe point at the club is allowing this to happen late in the day but then you can't control everything, you can try the moves earlier and they can still fail in exactly the same fashion so you're no better off. Maybe in some cases you get someone else afterwards but maybe the original target was the only one who truly fit the bill. Maybe you move on quickly early in the window, sign someone else and the original target comes back into play late in the day when you've done inferior business.

Transfers are complex, particularly so far a club without universal appeal, they'll go wrong at times.

Ok, well with Zinchenko they should have sounded out whether he actually wanted to come much earlier (I refuse to believe he simply changed his mind at the last minute) and the injury situation with Sanches - which we now know wasn't even true - should have been assessed before the last day.

If I'm sniping it's because we're being fed nonsense, we're having to pay very high prices for tickets and we aren't very good.

The way I see it, Zinchenko was interested in joining Wolves, but probably not 100% set on it….let’s face it who would be in that position. When it came to crunch time he changed his mind and stayed at City. It’s not really that far fetched a scenario is it?

Boly and Jota both took a lot of convincing to join too remember.

The Abraham one is interesting. Obviously decided to play regularly at Villa for rest of season. But I'm led to believe that had Lampard not become Chelsea manager that summer he'd have been a Wolves player.

Ok, well that’s weird - and you don’t get a more reliable source than this.

Absolutely zero chance of him coming here in January, but these comments would indicate that perhaps we never were in for him?

I can't really see how it would or could have happened

Vitinha or Fabio Veira from Porto are probably more realistic

We dropped the ball there. We could have had him for around 15m apparently and he'll cost much more considering his start to the season there.

Maybe, but we shouldn't not go for him on that basis

Classic Jeff.

Can almost forgive him for his lack of footballing knowledge, because the club should have footballing minds in/around him, but his lack of business acumen and poor decision making recently is alarming.

I was never sold on Vitinha (mostly because we didn't see enough of him to know either way) but when he was on a plate for us at £15million AND we only had 3 CMs (one of which hasn't performed well for an age) it was a no brainer to sign Vitinha.

Being honest I'd have even more serious concerns about them than we have now if they do go for him and pay significantly more. What has changed in our assessment over 6 months because he was at wolves for a year we should already know what he can/can't do. We didn't think he was worth 15m at that time so he's probably not now.

Players improve, sometimes very quickly. If we’d been offered anywhere above £10m for Kilman in the summer most, if not all of us, would have said we should snatch their hand off. Now we’d say treble it before we even start a discussion.

What would have been the point of keeping Vitinha? He was here all last season, didn't show enough, now he's gone.

He can't have any complaints and using him as a stick to beat Shi with (no matter what we think of some of the other decisions Jeff has made) is highly revisionist, IMO.
