It's Official!!: Europa League Thread

As I wrote on another thread:

OK, the following happens, and in this order:

* Any clubs banned from UEFA competition cease to exist for these purposes.

* 3 places into the Champions League group stages from the top three clubs in the Premier League
* 1 place into the Champions League group stage for the winners of the previous season, unless they are one of the above.
* 1 place into the Champions League group stage for the winners of the Europa League, unless they are one of the above.
* 1 place into the Champions League group stage for the team finishing in fourth place, unless both the Champions League and Europa League winners are both English clubs, in which case this team goes into the Europa League group stage.

* 1 place into the Europa League group stage from the next placed club in the Premier League
* 1 place into the Europa League group stage for the winner of the FA Cup. If this team has already qualified, then the next position team in the Premier League qualifies.
* 1 place into the Europa League third qualifying round for the winner of the League Cup. If this team has already qualified, then the next position team in the Premier League qualifies.

* If the Europa League winner fills one of the Europa League spots available, then the "League Cup" place is lost and the remaining teams are allocated places in the group stage.

Basically, there is a maximum of 5 teams from any one country in the Champions League, and 4 in the Europa League if both winners don't qualify through the normal criteria.

No country can get more than 7 teams in Europe. All the rest cascades down from that

Unless the Champions League and/or Europa League winners don't quality otherwise, when there's up to 9 possible places for an individual nation. In normal circumstances, you're right.

This.

It's 4 CL and 3 EL, or 5 CL and 2 EL.

All of those are from the top 7 places in the league. If the winner of the EL or CL comes outside the top 7 then it would only be the top 6 places (i.e 7th would lose the EL place).

If Arsenal were to win the FA Cup and also finish outside the top 7 that would also mean that 7th would lose the EL place.

That page is vague on the subject and doesn't really cover it properly - you need to read the UEFA regulations to get the full picture where there are 9 places available in the right circumstances.

If the UEFA Champions League titleholder and the UEFA Europa League titleholder come from the same association and do not qualify for the competition through their domestic championship, one of the following scenarios applies:

a. If the association is entitled to four places in the competition and both
titleholders qualify for the UEFA Europa League through their domestic
championship, the lowest-placed of the association’s UEFA Champions League
representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into
the UEFA Europa League group stage where a vacancy is created). In this case,
the association of the titleholders is entitled to one additional place (total of
five) in the UEFA Champions League, but the combined number of places to
which it is entitled in the two competitions does not change.

b. If the association is entitled to four places in the competition and only one
titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through its domestic
championship, the lowest-placed of the association’s UEFA Champions League
representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into
the UEFA Europa League group stage and the access list will be rebalanced
accordingly). In this case, the association of the titleholders is entitled to one
additional place (total of five) in the UEFA Champions League, but the number
of places to which it is entitled in the UEFA Europa League does not change.

c. If the association is entitled to four places in the UEFA Champions League and
neither titleholder qualifies for the UEFA Europa League through its domestic
championship, the lowest-placed of the association’s UEFA Champions League
representatives is automatically transferred to the UEFA Europa League (into
the UEFA Europa League group stage and the access list will be rebalanced
accordingly). In this case, the association of the titleholders is entitled to one
additional place (total of five) in the UEFA Champions League and one
additional place (total of four) in the UEFA Europa League

Guess he’s just being honest. I have no doubt we will put everything into winning against Olympiakos though!

Guess he can’t go home. Always find it weird when managers families live away from them. I don’t know his personal circumstances or the rules well enough to know if they can come stay here for a month or two. I know his son was at uni here but guess he has gone home now.

Man works for 12 months solid, would like holiday, virus stops that shocker. That's such a nothing tweet from spiers

Don’t think Tim’s said much there at all, just reported what Nuno said.

Nuno is unfortunately like a lot of people at the moment, cant see their family due to the circumstances of being in a different country (my dad couldn't go to his brothers funeral due to quarantines for instance), like rest of us, just have to get on with your work, I doubt it will have an impact on his attitude to work.

The state of the top reply. "Deserves to be in prison after those changes".

God, I am so glad this forum is the closest I have to social media anymore.

I'll pop this here (slightly edited) so that it doesn't get lost in the Chelsea verdict thread:

Qualifiers are only one leg this year and we may well miss out on at least one round compared to this season as we have our own UEFA coefficient now.

Unfortunately not - the round you start in depends on the national co-efficient, so, say, Liverpool would still have the same path.

Besides, our UEFA co-efficient currently stands at 12.000, which doesn't mean much as it's less than the current national co-efficient of 17.635 - so any theoretical seeding next season would be pretty much the same as this.

Two points per win, one bonus point for reaching the QF, SF and Final (so 3 available in total), so we would have to get to the semi-finals at least for our own co-efficient to be higher than the national one - and of course, as the national co-efficient is basically an average, the further teams progress, the higher it goes. If the national co-efficient goes above 18, then we would need to win the semi for ours to count.

If my maths is right, our co-efficient would be:
* 12.000 as it stands
* 14.000 if we were to beat Olympiakos
* 15.000 for getting to the Quarters
* 17.000 if we were to win in the quarters
* 18.000 for getting to the semi final
* 20.000 for winning the semi final
* 21.000 for getting to the final
* 23.000 for winning the competition

The only question would be around the single leg format - normally there's up to 5 points available for each round starting with the quarters (2 per victory, 1 per draw, 1 bonus for qualifying), but this year there's only 3. UEFA might need to adjust the co-efficients to stop this season being worth less than the standard, co-efficient wise.

If we were to go through against Olympiakos with a 0-0 draw, then you can subtract one from all those theoretical co-efficient points.

When I looked at the coefficient I couldn’t make sense of it. Ours is 12.000 despite winning 5, drawing 2 and losing which accounts for the 12.000 but the website says you get 3pts for making the group stage? Does this only count for group stage losers?

You only get bonus points for the Champions' League group stage, not the Europa League one. You also get bonus points for getting to the CL knockout stages that you don't get in the EL.

Oddly, our Qualifying Rounds points count for the national co-efficient, but not ours - we're currently worth 18.000 to the national co-efficient, the same as Liverpool who get all the CL bonus points (which is currently 9) on top of their match points.

Well that would make perfect sense then!

With Man City likely to go far in the competition and the same for Utd (and possibly us), that should boost the national coefficient significantly to help us out if we are in the qualifiers next year.
