He can always choose to use his hands, but he's going to be penalised for it by whatever the punishment is for handling a back pass. In this case an indirect free kick and no card according to the rules.

I could maybe accept a yellow for deliberate handball. Which would have been funny as he'd have been sent off for coming out early on the free kick.
