I remember looking through the Wolves book of stats as a kid and picking out Ted Farmer as unbelievable scoring ratio. It's such a shame he had to give up so young, his record was remarkable, he must have been some player.

Roy Swinbourne was one of my Grandad's favourites. Another who had to quit early.

yes, very sad for him given how good he must have been. there's a good thread on the mix about him. bigsaftkid's post is the best telling how as a wolves jr in 1956 he scored 86 goals in the season. sounds like some of the opposition may have needed some defense coaching lol

going back further, dennis westcott might still have had all scoring records but for the war. he had 43 in 43 in 38/9 and 38 goals on the restart 1946/47. he stats have 105 in 128 for us. so imagine what 7 additional years of scoring at that rate would have done. i think in that time he had about 100 war goals for the club that don't count. also very sad that he died of leukaemia when he'd only just turned 43

Yes it was a good read. IIRC correctly they'd finish the domestic season and then head out to the US for another one straight after.

I know that the medical world has moved on since then but the constant playing wouldn't have helped with regards to injuries,

Gees, guys, I watched Roy Swinbourne, Peter Broadbent, Johnny Hancocks, Dennis Wilshaw, Billy Wright, and Jimmy Mullen (my favourite) in the 1950s. You're making me feel so old!!!

We would easily have won more than two League Cups (74 and 80) if he carried on playing. A talent like that would have made a massive difference to any team.
