As I said, there would logically need to be some other things in place to mitigate for certain scenarios, like, as you allude to, a team being totally cut adrift just getting sent down the normal way without getting the one-off.

IIRC they tinkered with the 3 down 3 up in the 1980s? Didn't they have a playoff series between 19th and 20th in the 1st Division up against 3rd and 4th in the 2nd Division?

We finished 4th in the first season it was introduced, we'd have gone up beforehand, although hindsight says we were probably better off not doing so.

86/87? That was a play-off series that included 4th, 5th and 6th in the 4th division and 21st in 3rd division.

Linking it to Edwards, this isn't a good season for it as it's tight, but in ones where 8th are 6 or 7 points behind 6th you can talk yourself into still being in the hunt and not making the correct decision
