Don't like it in the National League, don't want it in the Football League. It's rubbish, you'll get some absolute jokers getting promoted sometimes from 8th. It doesn't even reward having a good season really.

Not sure how I feel about that. Last two seasons the team in 3rd had been 20points ahead of that position. The Luton season it was 12 but even that is a pretty decent gap.

2018/19 was the last time the 8th placed team got 70 points. 66-69 points ever since. Sorry but you do not deserve a chance at going up with such a paltry haul. Millwall finished 8th last season, lost 16 games and scored 47 goals all season.

I don't mind the two extra teams, but if you are doing the none league model it should give the advantage to the higher placed side like they do. 3rd and 4th get a home tie against the winners of the elimination games. 3rd-6th still gets the same number of homes games as they do now. The proposed model is just a grab for 2 extra TV games, which Sky aren't going to pay more for, so essentially the teams who win out of this financially are those finishing 5th and 6th who get an extra games revenue assuming they win their tie.

I don't think it helps the 2nd/3rd placed teams in the Conference though. The season ends with them gutted to have missed out on top spot, and they sit around doing nothing for ages waiting for the earlier rounds to finish, the teams that finished below them keep momentum and confidence going.

Looking at it, York played their final league game on 5th May and then didn't face Oldham in the semi-final until 20th May. Over two weeks out of action is far too long.

Oldham won 3-0 at York having finished 23 points below them.

You don't need to make it that long though. Championship season finishes Saturday lunchtime, knockout game Thursday and
next match Monday. That's the same timings as the Sheff Utd v Bristol C legs last year.

4th play 7th and 5th play 6th. 3rd get a bye to the final.

Keeps teams competing for 7th and stops teams dialling in the last few games if they can still make 3rd.

Not that they care about fans but that's terrible if you're one of the lower teams and have two away games in five days, all at no notice (assuming you don't know you've qualified until the final day finishes). Imagine if you're say, Hull, and you have Southampton on Thursday and Swansea on Monday.

Got to sort out minimum two days off work (for most people) with no warning and shell out for 2 x travel and tickets (maybe accommodation too) all in one go in a week.

And I mean, would you trust our ticket office to sort the tickets out, when for the second game they couldn't realistically go on sale until Friday morning, and the match is Monday...

Spot on, it was a controversial innovation but it has unquestionably been a huge success for nearly 40 years! Leave it.

Who (apart from fans of that club) is thinking 'you know those mid table chancers who lost a third of their games and were bumbling around in mid table all season but won their last three games when the opponents were on the beach, they deserve a shot at promotion'.

I look at our 97/98 and 07/08 teams that were in that kind of position, we deserved absolutely fuck all, we were awful.

Oh and if you want the killer argument against this rubbish, Glenn Hoddle's Wolves would have made the playoffs. Quite comfortably too as we finished 5 points clear of 9th placed Norwich (effectively 6 with a huge GD advantage), and that's with limping to the end with 3 wins in our final 11 games (including a mini-run of 6 without a win, [3 draws and 3 defeats]).

You go and ask any Wolves fan you like who witnessed that campaign if we deserved anything.

If there’s as big a gap as is said, it shouldn’t be a problem for them.

The round-robin format has plenty of merit but for me 2 extra doesn’t break things. The playoff rounds almost always suck apart from the drama, anyway. And, ultimately, playoffs are just in my blood. If the table doesn’t lie, 7 and 8 will be taken care of. And if they aren’t taken care of, I have no sympathy whatsoever for the favorites.

If I thought about it hard enough, I could probably think of something like cutting the playoff line based on a points threshold.

Related: I think it kind of sucks a lot that the league title can be decided with weeks of play remaining.

If I built the rules from scratch in the PL, I would probably have the top 6 go to a playoff, and for relegation have three one-offs: 15 v 20, 16 v 19, 17 v 18.

I’d probably need some mitigation regarding points totals (15th in relegation trouble does feel rough).
