General Wolves News

So taking that article at face value, we need to make a profit of around £11m in 23/24 to be safe from FFP? That’s when last summers business will come into effect so we’re miles above it surely

The actions of the summer and what we do cheaply (if anything) this window will probably protect for us for the next cycles.

We pretty much know we will have 1 decent sale next summer was well in Neto.

Last summer was a harsh reset needed because of shite we put ourselves in

When we sell Neto in the summer we will have loads of room. So what will the line be…

Correct to a degree - I reckon we'll be £25-30m short of the limit for the period just gone (20-23), but we'll be absolutely miles clear for 21-24.

The wages of Boly, Saiss, Coady, Collins, Joao, Neves, Nunes, Adama, Raul and Costa will absolutely dwarf that of their replacements - Toti, Dawson, Santi, Lemina, Gomes, Bellegarde, Cunha, Hwang. We've had some expensive managerial changes but that won't touch the sides of the gap left. With the income on Neves being pure profit, good profit on Nunes, amortisation cancelling move for Collins we'll be at least £50m clear for the period imo.

We can't afford to pay the big wages new signings would need as we can only spend 70% of what we receive in income on wages.

Thing is, all clubs like us will have to be more careful going forwards so they’ll always trot the quotes out about it.

In that sense, it's starting to work. Everton are a warning to clubs that if they spend money that they don't have and rack up massive debts, then there's a sporting sanction that, because it's only really going to hit clubs at our end of the table, could be catastrophic - meaning small/mid clubs don't take those risks. Where I disagree with the system (and I might be in a minority here), is that I think owners should be able to inject as much cash as they like to cover losses, providing it's a gift rather than a loan.

I just think the message got confused or the majority of journo's see FFP and just think instant danger.

They know the cut off dates for the figures so it makes sense what we did this summer/January as we are about to lose the 1 year of profit on the 3 year cycle, so another summer like the one before pushes us over the edge.

The club are obviously briefing them but a story of "club doing things to protect themselves in the future" is not as eye catching as "CLUB IN TROUBLE UNLESS THEY SELL EVERYTHING THAT MOVES"

Going forward though, whilst Hobbs is running the football side we will see Transfer Windows that align more with what Fosun wanted when they purchased us. Find a gem or 2, they bring us some us joy and then we sell and that sale then funds the hunt for the next gem or 2 and ultimately become self sustaining. It is essentially how Brighton are getting by but it won't be a strategy that pushes you into the Top 4 on a regular basis, which falls short of Jeff's dream.
Sadly the idea we can aim for top four once, let alone on a regular basis, is a dream and the vast majority of dreams don’t come true. Occasionally a couple of the Scum Six will drop back a little and a flicker of light will appear for someone like it did for Newcastle last year but it will need a lot of stars to align for it to be us. Three of four spectacular signings like Leicester made (Kante, Mahrez) at the same time as the big clubs falter and it could happen. Sadly Shi, like many new owners, might have thought he could aim for the stars but in reality barring a miracle we’re in the gutter staring up at them. Our highlights are bloodying a few of their noses which is fine by me as for the majority of my life Wolves haven’t been in the top flight.

Think its insane they can't do that.
Like TT said yesterday, and DW said years ago, I don't see the problem with owners putting money into a trust / bond / something that only the club can draw down against it, in agreed terms, to cover spending beyond the £105m over three years.

i.e. if a club wants to spend £80m on a player and pay him 100 p/w, fine, provided the money in the trust is there to cover those particular expenses for the full duration of the players contract. If the player is sold, great, the allocated money in the trust is given back to the owner

Neto - Big sale, pretty much guaranteed if he stays fit
Semedo - Last year of his contract, should still be a decent fee and huge wages off the books
Kalajdzic - Decent fee if he does well on loan
Silva - See above
Podence - See above
Jonny - Small fee but big wages off the books
Cundle/Lembikisa/Campbell - A few million of pure profit
Chiquinho - Few million perhaps
Hoever - Had some experience now, we might get a fee for him
Sá - Constantly linked with a move away, if he does move it should be a decent fee

That's a massive wedge right there without really touching the first team and I've probably missed one or two obvious ones as well (apart from the obvious massive loss that Neto will be and finding a replacement keeper). Then we might have interest in players like Lemina, Gomes, Kilman, Cunha, Hwang etc but we can basically name our price, they're all on long contracts and proven at a high level.

Not worried about it at all and it shouldn't be an excuse.

Neto, Semedo and Sa is definitely touching the first team! They'll all need to be replaced. Hopefully with some cheaper but decent performing younger players.

Ait-Nouri is probably the only one you haven't mentioned. We'd get very good money for him too.

I mean I said exactly that right after the bit you quoted. It's not that much upheaval really. Shows how bloated and full of shit our squad was/still is that we can have 2 summers back to back with this kind of turnover and still be okay.

It shouldn't be hard to replace Sá, we've known about the interest in him for ages so should have a list of candidates to replace (hopefully improve on) him.

There's no replacing what Neto brings to the team but the massive fee should stand us in good stead.

RB/RWB is a difficult one. It'll be interesting to see what position we see Rodrigo Gomes playing if we do sign him.

After this season Aït-Nouri still has another 2 seasons on his contract and we have an option of another year so yeah should be a big fee if he does go, especially in light of his recent run of form. We still owe Angers a 50% sell on clause though.

Briefed by the club, bringing January 2025 into the mix likely allowing the club to set the tone for future transfer strategy. Shift the goalposts from an immediate threat to one of the threat being Jan 2025.

Or I'm extremely cynical.
Don't think it's being too cynical. Proof will be when Fosun stump up money for transfers again (like Jan 23 was) without a big sale (like Nunes). It was crickets and a loss of a manager until relatively last minute in August, and nothing so far this window.

Time will tell
