General Wolves News

I loved the guy, he'd get in weird ruts though. That was one of them. How is that midfield ever creating anything, just think man.

People who castigate him do tend to forget the total shite we've had for most of the last 30 years.

Exactly, it was the first team since probably Turner that we had a team where they were all giving everything for the cause, every single one of them. Rather than going through the motions.

You could apply literally the whole of that post to Nuno, especially the second sentence.

The 06/07 team (first half of the season in particular) is the closest I've ever seen to a Wolves team getting more than 100% reward than they should have done, relative to ability.

Mind you, if it's any of our pre-Rui keepers other than Murray in nets, we'd have been 12th or lower. That and signing Kightly purely on Taff's say so were Mick's two bits of luck, he earned everything else.

I still like to see him do well, sadly Cardiff are in one of those runs at the moment and he's looking and sounding like an old man these days. A nice old man.

For all those who like to feel old in a masochistic way, on 17 November (so in about five weeks) it will be 15 years since Michael Kightly signed for us.

I do vividly recall Molineux Mix exploding about us signing a non-league player and not "quality".

I loved that season, he had his faults and sometimes he would cross the boundry from honest and true to being pig headed for the sake of it (obviously not a trait I see in myself!) but he was a decent man, and probably the second best manager we have had in my lifetime of being a wolves fan.

We did have some god awful games, and there was always a 3 minute period in a game of head tennis to look forward to, usually involving Neil Collins. I remember going to QPR away (imagine that a casual fan getting an away ticket) it was nil nil of absolute drivel. On the whole though we played some really good attacking football especially the first half of the season we went up.

I didn't go to that one (where Stephen Elliott missed an open goal?) but I did go to the 0-0 there under Hoddle. We had three shots. Two of them were in the same attack.

Sounds ridiculous when I think back but Kenny and I often considered just staying in the pub rather than going to the game in Glenda's time. Never actually did, because once you break that seal, it's never going back. It was a genuine thought though. We also had a downpour vs someone (I put Scunthorpe but it wasn't them on second thoughts, they weren't in the Champ under Hoddle and it was definitely a Hoddle game) an hour or so before kick off and we were hoping the game would be called off. Desperate days.

Mick gave us a lot back, the right man at the right time.

I was working away alot through Hoddles reign, thankfully. Most of my mates who had ST's developed an alcohol dependency during this time and didn't leave the concourse for the game.

Is that true?

Kightly had been released from Wham and was known to Dave Bowman and they were keeping eyes on him at S'end.

I know Man Utd were also looking at him but they wanted to see how he got on with us first.

I really enjoyed that first Mick season. Did so many aways in both that season and the promotion season as I found myself with very few home responsibilities to stop me doing so. Had an absolute blast doing it. QPR was a shit game though!

That really does make me feel old. Remember him being really good in a pre season friendly against Paul Ince's Blackburn I think it was.

Didn't Kightly join mid-season, back when you could loan people in between windows, then get made permanent in the January window?

Get ahdavit with yer signing Kightly making you feel old, just reading about Alan Sunderland leaving for Arsenal and it reminding me how pissed off I was st the time.....now that's old 😫

Yes. There were rumours at the time that Fergie enquired about him for United but his club said the deal with Wolves was already done.

I was at that QPR game! Pretty sure it was absolutely freezing, as it always seems to be at loftus road when I go. That miss was the only thing that happened for sure though.

Kightly was spurs as a kid, but definitely southend before Grays

Spurs, I always thought it was Wham 🤦

From what I remember he was a troubled soul at both clubs which got him released.
