Blaming Hobbs is easy, but it all depends what your opinions are on running 4 CBs in the squad when you plan to play 4 at the back (which GON did, then back tracked after the first few games). Seems fine as long as you have a reasonable youngster in reserve just in case, which I assume Meupiyou was intended to be that player.

I'm sure Hobbs feels let down by the manager too, as they would have had discussions and an agreement on how many they needed. Only for GON to switch to a back three, then blaming the signings for that.

I think if he's playing wing-backs he'd play Lemina as a 3rd CB who can drop into defence and then bring the ball out as needed.

I’m pleased to see R.Gomes and Andre given a start but I have no idea what the formation is. I’m just mainly relieved Doherty hasn’t been shoe horned in.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing. If the manager says he's playing 4 at the back then do you really need more than 4 senior CBs plus the 18 year old highly rated French kid you'd just signed to back them up?

They said since that if they signed another CB then Bueno would have gone out on loan. I guess that would have given us the option of recalling him in January, but losing Mosquera for the season isn't something you can plan for.

Going with 4CH might sound reasonable if playing a back 4 but one is 33 and had a bad injury last season, whilst Bueno, Toti and Mosquera were all far from proven. Today the stupidity of that choice will come home to roost. With a bit of luck someone above Shi will decide to issues P45s to Shi, Hobbs and O'Neill before bedtime and bring a whole new team in. Obviously won't happen but both GO and Hobbs must be looking over their shoulders rather anxiously.

One of your CBs is your LB and isn’t even that good. Another is an ageing one with tons of miles on the clock. Another totally unproven (Mosquera) and the fourth was rubbish last year and were willing to loan him out. Plus you’re only other back up defender is Matt Fucking Doherty. We needed some form of defender, certainly more than the other areas of the squad where we have tons of options we don’t use as DW says.

100%. It's not like any of the four were irreplaceable for a variety of reasons, whereas Lemina and Gomes was the strongest partnership in the team.

Andre was obviously part of the buy to sell succession planning. I'd much rather have done that with a LB personally, but it all depends who's available at the time who you actually want.
