To be fair it doesn't necessarily indicate backward passes, the lines are just drawn between average positions so the midfield may have been more advanced, unlikely I know, when he made the passes to them.It shows that when he got the ball, his instinct was to knock it backwards into centre midfield, rather than to run at the full back or try and find the forwards. It doesn't show that the movement from the forwards was limited to say the least. The positions and passing sequences are what I'd expect to see if we were 2 or 3 up at half time seeing the game out. It suggests we were more comfortable than we really were
He would've been on a bit of a hiding to nothing though wouldn't he, rarely much ahead of him so it's either go back and been seen as negative or constantly running at his man, not really his game, or limping hopeful stuff towards the box and probably losing possession, which probably gets him called shit or wasteful at least.
