It may be cynical, but made about last Summer and Botman and Sanches it's one I believe.

In the case of the first we bid the same amount, below what Lille were asking throughout the Summer. In that scenario normally you'd expect one of 3 things to happen, the bid be increased, the selling team fold or the buying team move on to their next target. In this instance none did.

In Sanches the leak is we are signing him, widely reported including by those you trust. A day later that falls down because we've asked for a medical opinion which says he'll be out longer than expected. He comes back in exactly the same week Lille said he would.

So we either didn't want to spend, are run by incompetents or most probably both

On the Botman/Sanchez stuff I would say we wanted deals that were similar to the one we bent over and gave Liverpool on Jota.
Difference was Lille had no requirement to sell and the players weren't keen to go so they gave us a different, more sensible option and we decline because of both your reasons.
A few hours later we even got told to piss off by Cardiff (thankfully).

And no way would vitinha have progressed this season with us like he would have with Porto. He's a baller for sure, but the way we play would have meant he'd have been on the bench most games. I.e. I doubt we'd have doubled our money in a season.
