Climate Change Debate

I sometimes wonder about the thought behind starting this thread.

HGW rarely, if ever, comments on anything else on this forum, he's certainly not a frequent contributor to the main sub-forum of this site, the Wolves one. With that in mind it seems a little odd to me that he chose this site as the place to start such a discussion, I wonder what the motive was? Is he trying to educate us football following folk? Or is there another reason he's chosen not to have this discussion elsewhere, you know like maybe a forum who's main focus is climate change? Not up to the required standard of debate when surrounded by a more informed audience perhaps?

Is there any way to see what percentage of someone's contributions are in any given forum or thread? Could make interesting viewing for some.

Others have posted links where the forum shows who has posted how many times on a particular thread, so pretty sure it can be done.
I'm not technical to know how to do this. I'm amazed I was able to work out how to edit a thread title (having messed up a prediction league thread again... ) but I'm sure it can be done.

Not sure what the actual point would be mind.

In conversation with friends who support other teams, general consensus appeared to be that the general chatter type sub-forums were the most interesting/fun areas.

We all have wider interests though.
The general chatter can be one of the more interesting and wide ranging sub forums. There's a lot of information here, and there are probably a lot of people who post in this section more than in others, or in the rest even.

I find a lot of information, facts, opinions, jokes and discussions that I am less likely to come across offline. I enjoy the vast majority, even if I disagree. Sometimes my own perspectives are challenged by threads/posts. I've discovered new music, heard brilliant and godawful jokes, and in general found out new things or ideas.

It highlights how many of us are more rounded people, with views held and debated on a broad range of matters.

Obviously everyone has their other interests but being a football based forum, specifically Wolves, you'd think that'd be the primary reason for someone being drawn to the site and then other conversations develop as things go off on tangents and people get to know other things about other posters. It's perfectly natural for those sorts of things to occur.

It seems strange to me though that HGW's seemingly sole purpose for coming onto this site is to talk about climate change and alternative energy sources, it seems odd that a football forum is his chosen medium for that discussion given he has little to no involvement elsewhere on the forum.

lol, i've made maybe 2 football posts in the last 3 years. i'm 95% music, 3% here, 2% random. not that i'm a prolific poster

You must have snuck in under my radar. :)

Were you previously more active on the football side of the forum? I suppose things change for people over time, I don't really have any passion for how Wolves get on these days but I'm still an avid football fan and do still follow the goings on despite not being an active supporter as such. I suppose if I was fresh to the internet today I probably wouldn't have stumbled across this community in search of a place to converse but several years ago my interest in Wolves was much greater so I was drawn in and now despite the interest waning I'm still drawn in through a sense of familiarity and habit.

I'd have thought most, if not all, on here were drawn by Wolves or at least football primarily to begin with, wonder if that's actually the case.

Boooo. :( Could've been some interesting revelations.

I very rarely post in the Wolves section as I know jack shit about football, whereas (like everyone else) I know everything about climates and coal and wind and stuff.

I haven't posted on this thread and I have spent the last year working in the construction of Windfarms, I really should pay attention as this affects my livelihood.

Ah fuck it, will go back to reading Frank's jokes.

Yeah you can look at each thread and see who's contributed what but I've not seen a way to do it the other way around, seeing who spends most of their time where.

No real purpose, just think it could turn up some unusual results.

Well HGW has 506 posts in this thread out of a total of 1664. There's your percentage, 30.4%.

You can also search for HGW's username in advanced search and select each forum one by one to see how many posts he has in each.

If I had a real inkling, I'd possibly look at my own postings.
On which not, to the annoy thread.

If you'd paid attention to this thread you'd have known you've just wasted the last year of your life. What's up for you next year - chocolate teapot manufacturing?

initially (on the mix) purely for the football and, unlike SLA ;), providing my expert insight into how the club should be run. i was never interested in anything OT at that point. even the music thread when i found it was of limited interest given what people used to listen to. i'd hardly have a bite in response to posts. not particularly rewarding

my football posts have now reduced to just whinging about diving and the like, and age has perhaps blunted the enthusiasm a little, that's for football in general rather than the club.

I know wolves stuff is the backbone of the forum, but general chatter is mostly a very good read and gives you another view of many things. the recipe threads are brilliant as are Franks specialities shit jokes and World War 1.

there's always something to catch, or a good scrap to join in or follow, especially when cypro shop is shut ( usually after it's shut, where the scraps are concerned) ha ha.

No more in-depth breakdown? A timeline perhaps? Could show how people's interests had changed over time.

and don't forget this thread came from discussions started in a different thread entirely.

i have 65 posts in this thread, make that 66 - probably 55 of those pointing out hgw's inconsistencies ;). 486 in the music thread which is just under 10% of it. out of a total of just over 2000 posts i've made.

as there have been other music related threads i reckon about 35% of my posts must have been 'music' related.

I wonder if anyone has ever changed what they believe, from reading a football forum. I mean political beliefs or something you feel very strongly about.

2000 or 3000 posts trying to tell someone what you believe is right and trying to convince them what they believe is wrong, seems like a lot of wasted time.

We also never know if a person believes what they post. It could be a wind up or a bit of fun. You never know if a person is a good person or a bad person from what they post.

Maybe the people easiest to wind up and ridicule are the ones that do believe what they are saying. Many people might take a certain thread as a battle, but they don't believe what the are writing about. it's just to see if you can corner someone or make them look stupid.

A football forum doesn't tell us how clever or stupid people are or how rich or poor they are. I don't think it tells us about other people at all. Maybe the funniest posters are the most unhappy, The kindest, are the most cruel.

Maybe the secret to being a good poster, is not to take anything too seriously.

Something I still have to learn.

Vis actually started the thread on my behalf without prior consultation. It was spawned out of another thread, the title of which I cannot remember at this point in time.
The truth is that I feel obliged to comment on here as the thread developes and I was never a prolific poster on the football forum, more observer. Currently I find the debate on there a shadow of the debate on the E&S site of 10-12 years ago. Until a few years ago I probably read all the football threads on here.
I spend very little of my time on here now and logically more time on fora that might be more relevent to my interests.
Thanks to Vis for providing the facility to make my choice and express my view.
