Brighton (A) 22/1: Build-Up & Match Thread

Probably somewhere but I'm going off what I'm sure I saw on MOTD not long ago
From SSN on the 21st of Dec...

But the Seagulls also top the table in more obscure terms. They have already made 70 changes to their Premier League starting XIs this year - 26 more than the next highest team, Nottingham Forest - as they adapt to the 'three games a week' schedule that comes with Europa League football.

Full strength. We have absolutely no reason to be resting players/writing off games.

Saying we never beat them, so put out our U 23s is bonkers.

This idea of Brighton being a bogey team for us - I'm not sure about that . Clearly recent result this season and last were very poor , but prior to that we handled them fine .
Under Lage we beat them 1 - 0 away with Saiss scoring in a mid week fixture as I recall it . Under Nuno we drew with them twice when we played them away ( 2 - 2 ) and ( 3 - 3 ) . I can clearly recall both matches being very entertaining as well .
We also beat them at home under Nuno 2 - 1 with Adama and Gibbs White scoring .

Brighton have shown something of a recovery in form lately , but they still draw a lot of matches , home and away .

Put our best side out - yes we are missing RAN , Hwang , Gomes and maybe Dawson . We do however have Lemina back and hopefully Dawson . Doyle is playing well too and Neto may even start . Concerned about Cunha re injury though .

We should have no fears of Brighton . It's time for us to strike back at them .

The best way to play them is to sit back and hit them on the counter. They want to draw teams out to come and press them high up the pitch so they can exploit the space. Pretty sure that was our mistake last time so interesting to see if we change our approach.

I don't think they are a bogey side in a hocus pocus way, but no getting away from the fact they've won the last 4 games, 3 of which were spankings.

In isolation each of those games can be explained though.

0-3 (h) - the players went on strike because the manager was a twat. Only 2 of each of the starting 11s that day will be in the squads on Monday
2-3 (h) - the Semedo game. 10 men before half time, but Mitomo won't be playing on Monday
0-6 (a) - a disgraceful performance against half their reserve team, but we were already safe and clearly on the beach, as unacceptable as that was and their finishing was unworldly
1-4 (h) - O'Neill's Wolves Globe Trotters game. Naive and punished, but lesson learned

They will be favourites as they are at home and have a decent record there and I'll probably pick them to win, but it won't be because of some hoodoo.

The overall record against them is

P41 W8 D14 L19

38 points out of a possible 123 as opposed to 71

They've also averaged 4 goals against us in their last 4 games.

They're as bogey as it gets.

Our record v Brighton is dreadful, especially when you consider them a club who traditionally have operated below us.

Games won: 8
Games drawn:14
Games lost: 19

This of course has no bearing on Monday, but traditionally we do have a poor record against them.

actually

@Tony Towner got me looking at results.

From 1979-1991 they recorded 10 wins in 12 games, we know during that period included the second darkest time of our history where everybody beat us.

So if you remove that they've got 9 wins in the following 27 against our 6 wins in the same period.

Can I only count them as a bogey team if I attended the games?

If i had to be there then the recent batterings don't exist and we will smash 'em...

You can count them however you want, you are our leader.

One of those drawn games was the nil nil in March 2020. I'm not sure that can be classed as an actual game of football. I'm not sure what it was TBH, but I request it's removed from the official archive to allow everyone involved to forget about it.

Getting dicked 6-0 was definitely less painful than that 0-0.

Worst game I’ve ever been to. Pure anti-football from them, so painful to watch.
