Yet again, this posturing is aimed at the EU but it has little to do with them, it is to appease the strident Brexit right of the party, who aren't happy with the concessions being made to the EU that allows some kind of rational Irish Border situation. Out of all the politics that has gone on over Brexit, this looks the most horrid and depressingly it wouldn't surprise me if it was end game all along.

The consequences could be dire and that's before you recognise that it is not a good look for a country to openly renege on an International Treaty.
