He did - sold one of his houses and had to pay double capital gains on it, so got rid. Don't think he even bothered to pretend it was any kind of patriotic gesture or anything.
The US applies taxation based on citizenship rather than residency, and the embassies in London and Zurich and Frankfurt are always busy with high flyers applying to get rid of theirs as well. Ironically of course the government there has long maintained that it's a justified system because expats are benefitting from the umbrella of American military protection in places like Europe, though I doubt the IRS will take recent events as an excuse for not filing the next return...
