It's crazy to look back and see the things I was taught in texas school systems. the civil war wasn't about slavery, it was about states rights. 2 years of texas history; bet you can't guess how that all went. american exceptionalism with westward expansion and aggressive indians. southern heritage.

one wider problem is that texas has an abnormally large influence on ALL textbooks in the US. because Texas is so large and places such high volumes of orders, whoever the people are with their hands in that pot, frequently get to provide feedback and/or the thumbs up/down on certain angles of history being taught... so while texas is a shitshow in its own right, their BS also ends up bleeding into other states.

It's the same everywhere mate, we were taught 1815 to the present day so a lot of emphasis was placed on the likes of the industrial revolution etc. very little was mentioned of us being one of the most evil empires in history, I would imagine, Spanish, Dutch and Portuguese lessons being very similar.
 
Yep, will confirm that NC also pushed the "not just about slavery" angle.

Yeah this kind of teaching is likely everywhere but I feel like the stuff around the american civil war is more nefarious than your run of the mill nationalism. There's a group called the Daughters of the Confederacy who, since the civil war, have skewed the national tone. They are largely the ones responsible for pushing the 'lost cause' narrative about how cool and totally not slavers the south were, the ones who pushed for Confederate statues being thrown up everywhere, and (shockingly!) have deep ties to white supremacy and the KKK.

All of this happened while it's barely even 'history' ! At least in England if you guys shirk on some detail from 800 years ago that's one thing, this shit happened in the 20th century and we're pretending like we don't have the information.

All countries (Germany excepted perhaps, at least about the 2nd world war) have selective amnesia.

Spain and the good ole US of A had concentration camps about 3 years or so before that.

That's what I was always lead to believe, but that was coming from a drunk Dutchman in Durban who had just conceded we won the second one

Rather than do some actual work I did some reading and it appears Johnny is mostly right (washes mouth out with soap), but we were the first to do it on a wholesale population (i.e. select by heritage / ethnicity)
 
The Belgians are the worst for whitewashing their colonial history. Never gets mentioned and yet some of the stuff that happened is horrific.

In the English school system I was taught that Gladstone (British PM) wanted to side with the south for that very same reason, but that every other British politician recognised the real reason.

No, Washington and Jefferson were if you are going for the big guns
 
More that he wasn't particularly interested in ending slavery in the Union until it became politically convenient, IIRC.
