Best holiday destinations

Had to cancel our trip to Japan and China in May as life dealt a shit card from the bottom of the deck but hopefully just a short break in play. We will see. Either way, a reminder to enjoy and appreciate such things.

The castle looks amazing, what a place to visit. Have an awesome trip.

Sorry your trip was cancelled, I hope you get the chance to go in the future. Osaka Castle, Himeji Castle and Kyoto have been fantastic. Kyoto is worth a visit, we've liked it more than Tokyo, though my perception of Tokyo is distorted by spending our first 2 days there sick with food poisoning.

Well we're just back from our trip to Marrakech.
Our first time outside Europe (yes I know it's barely outside).
Have to say it was terrific. Found the Moroccan people really nice, the staff at our (really, really cheap) hotel were incredible, genuinely friendly and helpful.
There's definitely a bit of a culture shock but we soon adapted.
The Souks were crazy but enjoyable. Quite a few historic sites to see in Marrakech but a week was a bit long. If we go to Morocco again will probably make it a 2 centre holiday, better still take our motorbike and do a proper long tour.

Got a week off work coming up, middle of April.

Mrs D and I have a list of places we'd like to go and things we'd like to do (we call it our "60 in 60") and we aim to do 60 things before we are both 60. I'm there already and we've done about 40 on the list (might be more).

So we are going to have a week ticking things off starting with a couple of days in Stratford upon Avon.(1)
I've also booked tickets to see Much Ado About Nothing by the RSC(2) on the Tuesday night.
Wednesday we travel to Battle to have a walk around the site of The Battle of Hastings.(3)
Thursday it's a train back up to London where we are doing a Jack The Ripper tour(4) on the night and some sightseeing on the Friday including the Tower of London.(5)

I know it's a bit "history heavy" but it's something we both fancied doing.

September the plan is to go tho America (I know) but the aim is to fly to Chicago(6) and do a Bears game(7) (that's all my doing) then drop down to New York.(8)

That list above will tick off 8 things and get us closer to the target so a busy year ahead!

The Ripper walk is good, did it for the 2nd time last year. Visited the Tower this year (last visited nearly 50 years ago). Give yourselves a good 5 hours or so to get a good look. If you get time I recommend a visit to the Mithraeum, the remains of a Roman temple located in the basement of the Bloomberg building.

Sounds great, exactly the sort of stuff we'd do. Missus and her mates did Jack the Ripper last year and loved it.

Sounds like a lovely week, and what a wonderful thing to have a such a plan and share those experiences together.

Funnily enough was at the RSC to just a few weeks ago, the wife always wanted to see Hamlet there and managed to put something together as a birthday treat. Never really been my thing but it really was amazing, and besides, it was definitely one of those special memories you get to treasure forever and that’s all that matters.

She’s just turned 50 so we’re heading off to Florence tomorrow morning to celebrate that. Flying from London City airport for the first time which hopefully will give it a special feel and with the sun shining things are feeling good and more memories to be made.

Have to be honest and say here that paradoxically there are some dreadfully crushing circumstances going on in the wider family background and it seems false at times talking about nice things when for months, at times you can barely sleep at night, but your post was so heartwarming and a reminder to focus on the positives and to appreciate everything. Yes that’s very random and something that may well find its way into the MH thread eventually, but just saying that helps a little but it has to stay in the happy positives sections for now.

Sorry if that’s a bit bizarre but there you go, somethings you can’t control. Anyway, I love your “60 in 60” and to already have done 40 is fantastic. Keep ticking them off and have a brilliant time.

Awesome stuff!
Stratford is lovely. Every time I visit the RSC I love it.
Battle Abbey and the village is great too. Went about 12 years ago. The audio tour for the battlefield is helpful.
Tower of London is great as per Leedswolf. He's right that it's most of a day to properly experience it.

Thank you for the response Epsom. Yes, try to make the good times stand out and cherish them.

I hope you have a wonderful time in Florence and a happy 50th to Mrs E

We are off to Northumberland in a couple of weeks. Don’t know the area at all. The beaches look fantastic.
Any recommendations for places to visit?

For starters;
Alnwick Castle
Lindisfarne
Belsay Hall
Cragside
Kielder
Hadrian's Wall (Corbridge, a Roman town)
Northumberland National Park
Hexham
Bamburgh Castle
All of the above. Check the tides if you do visit Holy Island, you get there via a causeway that is covered when the tide is in so it has been known for tourists to be stranded for a few hours.

Bamburgh/Seahouses well worth a visit.
Alnwick Castle/Gardens, too.
Morpeth is a pleasant town away from the coast, though not loads to do but some nice pubs.
Great fish 'n' chips in Amble.
Valley Junction in Corbridge if you like a curry (Indian Restaurant in the old station waiting room, good food).
