Beer

Really interesting article on Joule's Brewery and one of the best pubs in Britain, The Coopers.

Love the Joule's pubs here in MD.

They have just purchased the pub right next door to the Red Lion*. Think they are going to use it mainly for the brewery operation but they will get to extend the beer garden area by a fair bit.

*It was an odd pub. One a visit with my son, when we were leaving the barman said he would need to help us with the door to get out as it sticks and is difficult to open....it was just locked

I like Joules beers and the way they run their pubs. They took over my nearest pub a few years ago and made a pretty good job of it. It still retains a lot of its original character and the restauranty bit they built on the side is very much in keeping.

Shamefully I'd never heard of them so thanks for sharing the article, really good read.

They're cracking pubs, we're pretty lucky to have two we go to regularly up here.

Always visit the Red Lion whenever we have football in MD, Mrs Trips has to force me out the door as I'm always up for sampling every beer they have on 😅

Furthest pub from the pitches and not on your way home....well played on that diversion

Great piece that. Photos really capture the atmosphere of the place perfectly.
One of the truly great pubby-pubs 👍

There are numerous Joules pubs near me and almost all have had issues with their Pale Ale this year. The landlord at one admitted that they [Joules] knew it wasn't right. That said Shropshire Gold by Salopian Brewery and HPA from Wye Valley have also had a poor year. Something to do with the grain or the process? I have no idea but it's across too many pubs, agreed by too many customers and affecting too many beers to be a coincidence.

Either that or I've changed my toothpaste...

Not quite as good as the other box, but this is a brilliant deal - https://www.fullersbrewery.co.uk/products/black-friday-vintage-mix-case

2 bottles of each of the following Vintage Ales for £72 with free delivery:
- 2016
- 2018
- 2019
- 2020
- 2022
- 2023

They age ridiculously well (I've recently read about people tasting the original vintages from the late 90s and saying how good they are) and for £6 a bottle the value is superb. Normally cost £7 for the current year, £10 for one and two year old vintages, £15 for 2019 etc. They don't even usually sell anything old than that, but when they do they can cost a pretty penny.

And for an added Brucey bonus, use the code PRIDE20 at checkout today and you get 20% making it £57.60 which still qualifies for free shipping.

I should work in beer sales!

Brewdog need to hurry up and do some more Born To Die, I’m craving a good, crisp, clear, bitter as fuck IPA, I’m getting so bored of all the hazy fruity stuff at the moment. Might switch to porters for a while now the weather has gone cold.
Robinson's do a strong winter beer. In local pubs (Stockport) they had it on tap and they'd refuse to sell it in pint glasses.
"Too strong, only in half pint glasses. Or a bottle"
Theakstone's 'Old Peculiar' is a Winter Warmer type beer too.
But you've probably had that.
I'd go back to a long repeated post and recommend the 660 ml bottle of 'Innis & Gunn' Fucking magical stuff. Sainsbury's do it.

Lot's of breweries (used to) do stronger ales for Christmas and limit the measures to half pints.

Innis & Gunn stuff doesn't float my boat in the slightest.

Everards did Old Bill as a 9% winter warmer at least thirty years ago that I remember Roy and the idea will have gone back decades with multiple breweries before that too.

My old mates from Uni are coming to Birmingham on Saturday so I’m meeting up with them for the afternoon/evening. It’s been a while since we met up so I’m looking forward to it.

I haven’t been out in Birmingham for ages, can anyone suggest any pubs that we should be checking out?

Which bit of the city you going to?
