Barnsley v Wolves: Matchday Thread

Saiss was my MOTM. We were unlucky today - we didn't play badly, we'll play worse than that and win. Just one of those days when it wouldn't go in for us.

Mir looks useful and Cav again looked dangerous when he came on. The defence were excellent yet again, especially Boly who is way too good for this league.

2 points dropped but absolutely nothing to worry about.

Sums it up really, second half we played really well and should well have scored at least once.

From the commentary sounded as if we cod have done with Cav a bit earlier

Needs to start really - Costa is not giving us the same level of impetus at the moment

Not the best of games. But a decent away day where the beer made up for it.

I had a bet on for a 0-0 draw but as the game opened up I cashed out, it is surprising it ended goalless but we still looked really good in patches just missed that finishing touch.

What encourages me is from the little I have seen of Mir he has different qualities to Leo and the contrasting options along with the Cav/Costa options will prove very useful when we are looking for a different way to break teams down.

Can't wait for the Swansea game really excited to see both Mir and MGW in action, staying at the Dragon hotel if any of you lot are over that way.

Not really a big deal - in the last 5 games only Fulham & Brentford have more points than us (and they are 20 & 22 points back respectively)

Cav has to start over Costa now

I'm not sure if we change the way we play in the second half or the introduction of Cav but we certainly played better

Both Costa and Jota were poor. Jota doesn't want to run at players amy more, whereas Costa tries and fails too often. Jota REALLY should have scored. Cav needed introducing much earlier.

Mir looks to be almost identical to Leo IMO. Maybe a bit taller and possibly could better with his head. Similar lack of pace though and looks to have a similar technique and ball control. I'm going to need to see much more of him. I wouldn't be starting him yet though.

Thought we were ok today but a little sluggish. Neves and Jota had poor games and Bonatini was really poor IMO. Barnsley were very organised but never really looked like scoring, whilst we had opportunities that on another day would have fallen for us.

Wonder if Nuno is considering dropping Jota and playing Cav and Costa? As Costa looked lively, we just weren't quick enough to get the ball to him for him to make a real impact. Mir had a decent cameo, seems to have a good first touch but is a bit more direct than Bonatini.

Point gained and we move on.

Must be a new player coming in:

Still light years ahead of any Lambert performance so shows how far we've come.

For all the Bonatini negatives...we never play a through ball to him, watch him,he's constantly making the movements and gesturing but it's never put through.
I'll agree he isn't a "fox in the box" when the balls crossed in but let's play to his strengths.

Observations:
Jota plays better when Costa isn't on the pitch for some strange reason.

Costa was playing well just before being subbed.

Jota needs to release the ball quicker, he does the hard part then seems to be either waiting to be fouled (and not every tackle is a foul) or just plain greedy.

Boly is fucking awesome.

10 points clear = heaven

As I said after the Sunderland 0-0, if we can’t win then a point and a clean sheet is the next best thing, sounds like one of those days where we would’ve won most times. I think Cav needs to be starting though, always seems to be heavily involved in our best play.

Is there an argument for putting Saiss into the back three for Bennett and then putting MGW / Ndaiye next to Neves.

Bennett is great but I think Saiss passing from the back would give us more options and MGW / Ndaiye are a bit more dynamic in midfield.

A back three of Saiss, Coady and Boly - any one of them can play a killer pass and all are good on the ball

Andy - you do seem keen on changing something that is working very nicely already.

Exactly, dont change a backfour that is keeping clean sheets already.. just bad luck not winning yesterday with those chances..happens to all teams now and then..

“Ryan, you’ve been part of a side that’s kept 14 clean sheets in 17 games, but you’re dropped, mate”.

Don’t be ridiculous.

From a defensive point of view Bennett has been outstanding.

This is more from an offensive point of view, and given our back three (not four) have a lot of the ball it seemed sensible to me to have somebody in there who has the ability to pick a pass and be comfortable in possession. Bennett isn't as good as Saiss in this respect hence the idea.

Right now teams know that Bennett is the one they can press up high as he's unlikely to exploit them. When teams press Boly / Coady they ping it to the other side of the pitch.

We should always be looking to see how we can improve

Why would you press him if he can't hurt you? It's more likely to be the other way round, you press the ones who can do damage given the time to pick a pass and rest up when the shit house has the ball. Something Wolves executed excellently years ago when they got that first PL away win at Wigan, it was press, press, press, oh wait they've passed it to Bramble let's all have a breather while he belts it 10 yards over Koumas' head, again.

It's all irrelevant really, it doesn't sound like creating chances was a problem for Wolves yesterday anyway. If Bennett was on the bench would it have stopped team mates being offside or prevented Jota from hitting the bar and missing a sitter?
