Aston Villa (A) 4/1: Build-Up & Match Thread

Agreed, massive game. Maybe it's the Bruno Lage-syndrome hanging on, but I think we'll get beat. Three points would be absolutely huge, though. From a mental perspective of getting out of the bottom three when some people had already written us off pre-world cup, it would really shift the momentum in our favour. Especially as some of the other sides (Hi Everton) surely can't get any worse.

I'm hoping for a Cunha debut goal.
If we win tonight, which IMO is highly likely, I think we will pull clear of bottom 3 and come March the threat of relegation will be a distant memory

Not looking for a fight, but why are we highly likely to win? Fancying us to win I get, but highly likely?

Wrong turn of phrase. Highly likely means I think we will, basically. It’s a real 50/50 game for me and I fancy us to get the job done. Just an opinion/feeling which may be totally wrong 🤷‍♂️

My reasoning behind that is, if Villa is a free hit then will Man City away and Liverpool at home also be free hits. thats half of the next six games meaning must wins against West Ham, Southampton away and home to Bournemouth. No wiggle room for me to declare free hits.

Unreal pressure on the West Ham game if we get nothing here. It's definitely not one to mentally throw away.

I agree this isn't in the bonus game camp, I don't see us winning, but we should be looking to get something out of it.

Even on the bonus games I put a stat up on Saturday showing we are the only side in the bottom 6 who haven't got something against a Sky 6 team, since then Forest have got another point. Individually they are games we are likely to lose, but collectively we should expect something from at least 2 or 3 of them across the season.

This really really really isn't a bonus game. Love you YW but that's testicles.
Obviously it’s not but for me I’ve looked at the next run of games and which ones I think we desperately need points from. I just think it’s a bonus if we get a point or three tonight. Not one to mentally throw in the slightest (we can’t afford that regardless of opposition right now) though.

(I think I’m just managing my expectations)

The last time we were in this kind of position under Mick then we did, even when we were properly awful:

2009/10: Beat Spurs home and away, drew with Liverpool at home
2010/11: Beat Man City, Chelsea and Man United at home, beat Liverpool away, drew with Spurs at home
2011/12: Drew with Arsenal and Spurs away

Of course.

Although they were under Roy with the likes of Poulsen and Konchesky in the team at the time, not really a big fish :)

Don’t understand the theory of this being a ‘free hit’. If it is, basically means atleast 50% of the games in the league are.

Not free hit sorry, bonus game. Amounts to the same though

Villa will be buzzing after their 2-0 win away at Spurs. I appreciate Spurs are fairly gash at the moment, but that kind of result at a side like that seems a long way away for us at the moment (certainly not as much as it did a few months ago with the PE teacher in charge but it's just our lack of goals). They've beaten Chelsea & Man Utd not so long ago and I thought they were a little unlucky to lose like they did v Liverpool too. Emery is a good manager and has them organised. He's had more time than Lop to work with his squad. It's not a "free hit", just a really tricky fixture - but then I guess they all are.

I think we'll be up for it tonight. Local derby, new player making a debut up top etc - but I still think we'll lose. Hope I am wrong, I really do!

As I always say I think we’ll get beat but we can’t afford to nor can we have a brave effort and not get anything. Our situation is one where we need to pick up points when it’s not expected.

A back 4 containing Mings and Digne means surely even we are capable of opening them up. Just got a good feeling today and I haven't had one regarding wolves for a while.

A loss is a poor result. A draw is good, a win excellent.

We shouldn’t be going to Villa and expecting to be beat or even accepting it

to play devils advocate, they're clearly a better team than we are
