I didn't have a mobile phone until my 2nd year (Nokia 3210, obviously) but a lot of my friends still didn't have them then - it seems horrendous to me now that we had to function and make plans without mobile phones! I remember having to trek to the computer rooms with my floppy discs to get my assignments done, and once I got my own PC (massive, like the one in the article) I remember having a wire stretching for miles round our house to plug into the phone socket so I could use dial up internet!

Yeah, I had a BT Cellnet brick to start with before I got a 3210. Even though I'm as guilty as anyone for spending way too much time on my smartphone, it was so nice to actually have to plan things and be there at the agreed time to meet people. And people weren't as late as often.

I used MSN a lot in my 2nd/3rd years to save on text messages!

I was at V99 too. I remember we all had mobiles but none of us could get much of a signal in the main arena so had to make plans on where to meet after certain bands before we went in. Plus it was too loud to hear your phone ringing most if the time.
