2021 Cheltenham Festival Tipster Competition

I'm only a casual watcher of NH racing, so how is it that the Irish Stables, in the last few years, have overtaken the British stables to such a degree. Is it the money going into them by buying better horses from the likes of O'Leary etc or is it training methods?

Prize money is a big reason, it's terrible over here. I still think there's far too much racing and far too many options for horses to run rather than take each other on. Biggest owners are sending the majority of their best horses over because of that and they're picking up the best point to pointers easier too. English racing needs to have a good think about where it's going.

Nando said it better than i did.

Prize money over there is on a different planet and that is attracting the big owners. Cheveley, Donnelly's, Masterson's are all UK based, but have the majority, if not all of their horses over there.

Gigginstown have ploughed in millions on top of that and then you have new big players like Robcour and the Moran's spending hundreds of thousands at the sales which is keeping the best bloodstock in Ireland. Very little of the top crop comes across the Irish sea now.

Nicholls doesn't have an owner who can compete in those open sales - he's adopted a different approach in recent years in targeting the store sales rather than the P2P sales where Robcour/Cheveley/Moran take the pick. Henderson doesn't have a big player outside of JP who doesn't usually go big at the sales, with the odd exception and with his campaigning of horses over the past couple of years, I don't know why you'd send him one.

Olly Murphy probably has more money pumped into his yard than most others at the moment, but hasn't delivered on anything. It'd help if he didn't think that everything in the yard is the reincarnation of Denman.

The racing programme is miles superior too - it brings the best horses together on a regular basis, giving them experience at a much higher level with races run at a proper pace. The number of UK based horses who have been off the bit early this week is remarkable - they've just never gone at a proper gallop in winning egg and spoon races.

That was as close a race that there's been this week.

Porlock bay has it I think.

Yep IHB need to be given a lot of credit for what they have done over the last 10 years. Upto 2013 getting 5 irish winners would have been considered a great year.

Another factor is that in the past there were horses which were not great on the flat but then in the winter went over the fences and were found to be quality. Nowadays the majority of those horses in the UK are now campaigned on the cat litter in the winter, who knows how many potential cheltenham horses have been missed.

Another cracking race. Matched each other stride by stride for the last mile or so and Culreevy just managed to get up in the last furlong.

Bah - Thought Elimay had it.

The general trend of the not quite good enough flat horses being moved over to Australia/Hong Kong given the $ on offer over there is certainly an issue on top of that too, particularly in terms of bringing through good hurdlers. The issue isn't just related to the jumps, Gosden has been very vocal about the state of the flat scene too - fundamentally it boils down to the prize money and it is pitiful at the moment. Much work needed.

Nevertheless, a brilliant week that has absolutely flown by. Happy to run another for Aintree if anybody is interested.

Always interested to be fair even if this week has been a disaster on here. I've rescued myself by more luck than judgement from doing my bollocks in real life by somehow backing Belfast Banter today and Put The Kettle on in the Champion Chase.

Will have the final table up tomorrow - today's results have borked for some reason so I need to review again.

Cheers Nando. Very enjoyable again. And my usual performance of finishing well in debt!

Congrats to Darlo on some very nice big priced picks.

Cheers Nando for the time and effort put in.

I’ll take third considering horse racing isn’t my forte and my picks were made by reading two or three tipster pages to narrow my choices down.

Fantastic competition Nando, thanks for running it.

I don't think I'll match that at the Aintree Festival!

Gratz Darlo, smashed it. Cheers for running it Nando👍.

Thanks to Nando for running the contest. Always enjoyable and congratulations to Darlo for winning.
I’ll partake in the Aintree one too.
