In the Times today, I thought this was interesting:

Where do you see yourself?

I’d say I’m a Civic Pragmatist.

None of the above...

I'm probably a mix of Progressive Activist and Civic Pragmatist.

Can you be an activist and a pragmatist..?

There's the last line of the Loyal Nationals mixed in with an element of established liberal and civic pragmatist

Minimal labels like this don't define anyone - I'm a mix of bits from many none of which is that helpful.
That was kinda the gist of the article, worth a read if you have the Times. Point which was being made was that in the US there are much fewer identifying traits which make a culture war more vicious as people are more polarised.

Can you be privileged if you've earnt what you've got ?

I guess you can in the sense of having the innate ability to earn what you've got - if you've got a lot.

I'm closest to progressive activitist but none of them really fit.

Being a white, hetrosexual male born into a lower middle class background is a position of privilege. Whatever i have achieved I haven't had to overcome the barriers that would have been in the way if I wasn't those things
Ding ding ding

I know I always blamed my Mom being a District nurse and my Dad being a maintenance fitter for me not becoming one of the Harlem Globetrotters, which was my lifes aim as a kid

But surely privilege must be bestowed on you
The definition is a special right, advantage, or immunity for a particular person. I believe that if you are born with (i.e. have bestowed upon you through no effort of your own) above-average intelligence, talent or some other ability that allows you to achieve a well-paid position (in extremis, think Leo Messi, Lennon/McCartney), then you could call that a privilege. Or just lucky. I think the distinction I'm making here is that it's possible to be privileged without coming from a privileged background.

I don’t think any of this is right.

Privilege is a social scale not an ability scale isn’t it?

This.

If you were to use the footballing analogy you'd use our very own Darren Ferguson who used his privilege to play at levels above his ability.

Likewise, as manager of PNE he was granted access to Danny Wellback, Matty James, Richie De Laet and Josh King who were then recalled the moment Darren was dismissed.

Both examples are of his social resources rather than his ability.

Andrea Pirlo getting Juve as his first job. Lampard getting Chelsea after half an underwhelming season with Derby. Mikel Arteta getting Arsenal.

Meanwhile, Vieira (spelling?) had to “prove” himself in MLS before getting consideration in Europe. Weird, isn’t it?
