Wolves v Sunderland 02/05 - Build up and match thread

I don't fully share your overall view on Sa. He will land in the "meh" list of players but...

I have seen many a shit keeper play for us and many a dreadful performance but I doubt i will see anyone come close to Sa's non performance v Brighton in the Cup under GoN. He was in full on strop mode that he had missed out on a move (amazingly Chelsea tried for him) and what he did that evening should have been worthy of a contract cancellation.
That was the nadir but there's so much random crap.

Look at this positioning from a supposed top flight keeper. Not like he doesn't have time to get back either. He just aimlessly wanders around. Does it all the time. There was an even worse example in one of his very early games under Lage vs Brentford and they somehow only hit the bar, it was like he'd been on the Guinness pre-match.

Will not miss going into every single game not having a clue what our keeper's going to do, could be 9/10, could be 1/10, who knows. Or the endless penalties conceded because he just clatters into opponents (he's in the top 10 conceded of all time in the Premier League, that's all players, including defenders who've played 500+ games, not just keepers).

He must be close to the top of the list of lowest % penalty saves too I would think?
Saved one with a broken hand once.

In Greece he had a strong record but then came here and went on a run of conceding them all. Then seemed to save a decent % after that.

He's saved four for us:

Mitrovic vs Fulham under Lage (at this point he'd gone his entire first season saving 0)
Johnson vs Forest under Davis
Son vs Spurs under Pereira
Vardy vs Leicester under Pereira (now also over a year ago, so he's gone a year without saving one)

Conceded 26

Giving him a save percentage of 13%

Serie A appears to be full of our 2004-2005 squad for taking them (minus Kev Cooper)

I was directly behind that Elliott strike and had no idea how a shot has gone in basically mid height and a yard off centre and he was nowhere near it. Where were you?

The Brentford one was funny. I think it was Mbuemo and he was 1v1 with a defender and Sa wasn’t even facing the play so any shot on target was in. But he didn’t see Sa was randomly trying to run backwards facing the wrong way so tried to work a yard and spank if and hit the bar when any shot on target was in, could have literally rolled it In. Don’t think I’ve ever seen a GK run back to his line before with his back completely to play, as you say it was like he was pissed.

I didn't go, cup game, midweek, on TV, from memory we were charging silly prices, someone else can have my seat for that one.

So was at home watching on BBC and of course they give it the "oh what a strike" treatment when it goes in. When they show the other angles, they just gloss over it a bit and hope no-one brings it up again.

I was there watching from a not great angle in the family enclosure. All four of us weren’t just confused as to why he was out of place, I remember we were all trying to work out where he was at all. It was bizarre. We played well enough to get a result in that game too I seem to remember.

He did similar in the Brighton 0-3 at home too. Went complete walkabout and left the goal at their mercy but they didn't capitalise.

That day several players clearly downed tools at Lage so I always forget it as part of collective issues coming to the surface rather than individual liabilities.

Not travelling today. Woke up and for the first time simply decided I couldn’t put my family through it. Sad and relieved at the same time.

Sad but don't blame you.

Part of me thinks the best thing for the club is for us to get thrashed in our remaining games and make Edward's job untenable

It should be untenable anyway given what he's shown so far, his history and the noise the club have been making about aiming for promotion next season.

I get where you're coming from though.

We could get smashed by Sunderland, Brighton and Fulham but beat Burnley away on the last day and there would be people giving him a standing ovation in the away end. I don't know what happened to our fanbase that we're all of a sudden so accepting of what's barely even approaching mediocrity but I hate it. It's not even apathy, it's just blind loyalty.

I’d like to think it’s partly strategic. I want some form of enthusiasm for going next year from the troops, and every full day there and back at present is just a blow to enthusiasm to renew. Although it’s really that I’m just done with where everything is. Edwards might well be the symptom rather than root cause. His LinkedIn pressers may just be word soup because, well, what else can be said. But the relentless garbage on the pitch, and the acceptance of it in the stands as @Lycan says. I’m just done for the moment. I’d literally be driving hours just to politely fume behind the clown, and it’s not very healthy!
