Wolves v Stoke: Carabao Cup Rd 2

I'd like to see a proper second string for this:

Söndergaard
Sanderson - Marques - Kilman
Buur - Vitinha - Perry - Richards
Shabani
Silva - Campana

How would someone like John Ruddy feel about not even getting a game in the cup? There’s no way he goes that weak.

I’ll have a guess -

Ruddy

Burr
Sanderson
Coady
Kilman
Vinagre

Vitinha
Neves

Jota
Silva
Campana

Something like that.

Yeah I know but I couldn’t think of who else he’d play there. I can’t see him using Neto/Podence in this - maybe off the bench for a few minutes at the end.

He'll probably use Podence - he's been training at the club and hasn't been away on international duty so he'll be able to handle the game time

Never use a post of mine to try and point out facts, that will simply come back to make you look a fool

Its time for Sondergaard to get a chance, I'm rather surprised Ruddy hasn't gone tbh.

I presume we're keen to keep hold of Ruddy as he helps our home grown quota. Clubs seem to like having an English GK in the squad.

Also, even at this point if Rui got injured I think Nuno would prefer to play Ruddy than put Sondergaard in for his first senior appearance in the league.

I agree for the league, but I’d hope he ready to play stoke reserves. Looked very good against Burnley in U23s at the weekend.

Considering that we played last Monday and are due out again next Monday in matches that are vital to our progression , then I can't see Coady playing . Jota and Neves could do with a match , Kilman , Ruddy , Burr , the two newbies and there you have plenty of experience .

I can't see what harm there is in progressing in this competition even if we are unlikely to win . We have no Europe to distract us and no long journeys half way across Europe . It gives our subs / second string a chance to play as well .

I think a good run in any competition is important in building a winning habit/mentality. I don't buy the 'we're not going to win it' argument. No team except one is going to win it, but most will be trying to.

It's not that we can't win it, I just don't think we will and it always gets thrown out that it's an "easy route into Europe". Is it heck as like.

Your winners going back to 2005:

Man City x 5 (including four of the last five seasons), Man Utd x 4, Chelsea x 3, Tottenham, Liverpool, Swansea, Birmingham.

It's not a competition that tends to lend itself to breeding shock winners. In that time Portsmouth and Wigan have won the FA Cup so the exact same hit rate.

I think seeing as in the last 2 seasons we've made it to the semi finals of the FA Cup and the QF of the Europa League we could realistically win any cup competition we enter, provided we take it seriously. The way we set up we're capable of winning any game against any team in the world on our day.

I'm unsure how we're going to approach the League Cup this season. On one hand we haven't had a pre season and this could be a good opportunity to get first team players competitive minutes under their belt but on the other it'd definitely be in our best interests to rest our first teamers as much as possible given the shortened season. We could see a team similar to Villa away last season where we clearly didn't care about the result of we could see a strong team with only a few changes.

Also worth mentioning that winning the LC only gets you into the Europa Conference this season.

As shit as it sounds, there will still be some decent teams that drop into that Cup and after last season and experiencing a Euro away game I would take a game against any old shite in Europe for another one of those trips

Oh yeah 100%. I'd also back us to take it seriously if we did end up in it but I don't really think the club will see the potential of playing in the Europa Conference as motivation to go out and target the League Cup.

Sorry, I meant I don't buy the 'we won't win it' argument as a reason for not taking it seriously. For any cup game I'd like to see us putting out a side that the opposition will have to play well to beat. That often isn't too high a bar, but it was one I was disappointed we didn't try too hard to clear when we lost last year.
