Always a good idea to take your shot early imo, if you watch any of Bully's goals he rarely took more than one touch and he didn't do too badly, many modern players seem to want to walk the ball into the net

I remember Jimmy Greaves saying, that you couldn't teach/coach the ability that Bully had for scoring goals, it was natural technique.
