Wolves 2 - 3 Spurs: The "where's the VAR" result thread

Gary Neville made an interesting point last night in the commentary - "You need to spend £30-40m on players to go to the next level." I think that's exactly where we are now. Lamela cost Spurs £30m (from memory) and last night the difference between him and say, Costa was clear to see
And that was five years ago.

I had a great day yesterday. Nice to meet banjo (briefly), white wolf, and realise pablo is the fella I've sat and shared laughs with previously. And feedback on cheese festivals...

Great atmosphere pre-game around the whole town, and in the walk to the ground. These are truly good times.

Dimming the lights for the tributes was classy. An interesting point of the clubs culture coming through.

I thought we had a bit of a game of 2 halves. Thought we were average first half, but much improved 2nd.

Thought the back 3 generally were ok, but teams have worked out that Bennett is the weaker option to pass out fro, so if he's the free man who the ball goes to they're likely to recover it. A couple of times I felt he was given the ball and had no options on and tried his best, but spurs recovered the ball and some in the crowd moaned at Bennett. However equally his team mates didn't give up on him, and continued to pass to him regularly, and to me showed him they believe in him. Nuno's mantra of the team runs through us, and this was great to see. Coady had a good game, and thought Boly was superb. Had been really looking forward to seeing Jonny, and thought he was a little off it first half, but was great 2nd half. Doherty is now adding sweeping long balls to switch the play to his game now. He did a couple, that reminded me of Hause doing similar, and with Neves and Coady's ability makes me wonder if this is Nuno and the teams development of our lads skill sets.

Neves and Moutinho are quality to watch.

I thought Costa and Jiminez were really good. Cav was ok, felt he tried a few unnecessary fancy flicks at inopportune moments, so was rightly subbed.

Leo was an enigma, but his pressing was invaluable. Gibbs-White was phenomenal.

Spurs were great at game management. Their clinical ability to move the ball quickly into attacking positions was superb, as was the way they finished. The first 2 goals for me were collective lapses. They type we'd have got away with last season, but not this.

Suspected when we got the first that we'd be prick teased for the remainder of the game. So it turned out, we got the 2nd goal with too little time left. Think if we'd had another 5 mins, we'd have got an equalizer.

Didn't know Jiminez's goal should've been awarded until seeing it on motd.

I think we're improving. Costa is developing well, and we're adapting to being in the PL. we're playing frequently against strong teams with really good tactical set ups, who have researched us well. They're not steam-rolling us, and we're not playing defensive football/parking the bus trying to nick enough 1-0 games or draws to acheive 40 points. We're evolving. We need to cut down on the amount of misplaced passes we make though, and yesterday there was't any individual culprit, most players did this.

Positives - Gibbs-White is exceptional, and capable. Essential part of the 18.
Moutinho is amazing! My man crush on Neves is seriously challenged. He is ridiculously good.
Team spirit is strong. We didn't give up hope at all.
Fans are generally on side and back the team.
Nuno's subs worked better than the previous notion of having 4 forwards on the pitch.

Negatives - we need to address the lapses. I think that's our players still learning,
Both goals were pens, we seem to be struggling to score from open play. That said, see above as Jiminez's goal should have counted, and Costa is looking likely to score soon.
Didn't score again in the first half as mentioned by DW previously.
We could potentially go into the Huddersfield game on the back of 4 losses looking a bit goal shy. This could affect confidence, which our management team need to consider (though I believe they will be ok monitoring this)

It's not one game though, we've lost the midfield in the last two home games. MGW coming on the pitch, provided us with the legs Neves and Moutinho don't have but coincided with them being three up and letting us have the ball. In the first half we were overrun by Sissoko FFS. We might not have the defence to play a back 4, but we don't have a midfield to play a 2 either against the better sides.

First sentence aside, I see a lot of sense in this post. Think it might be something we ought to be considering as a tactic to change games, rather than from the outset though.

Agree with lots of what’s been said here already - it was a good performance but you sometimes need the extra quality to make your own luck.

One thing I’ll add is that I can’t be that annoyed about the wrongly disallowed goal, because we did get that point against Man City thanks to Boly’s handball. One of those instances where you can kind of say it’s evened out, I guess, although you can also make the argument that the performances in both games were worthy of draws.

Think the assistant had tunnell vision on the disallowed goal. He crouches down and I think he concentrates on Alderwiereld and Doherty only and in that split second forgets about the two spurs defenders in the middle.
You can forgive a marginal decision, but even watching it live it didn’t look offside.

Again, we shouldn't have lost this game..the same as Brighton..and the goal was wrongly disallowed, but anybody can see the problem..a real goalscorer

Jiminez scored one that was chalked off, won one penalty, and scored another. He isn't the problem is he.

I like him and his link up play but scoring record isn't there

I'm of the mind that Jimenez is still settling down in the country,he's come from a World Cup,come to a strange country, language issues, new training regime,it's all going to be a struggle,he's getting there, just maybe needs a bit more time.
I know that can be seen as a cop out,but how many of us could go to a strange country and be instantly good at what we do,be that office work, car repairs or whatever,we'd all struggle for a year or so

Scored 3 in 11 and created 3 i think? At this risk of going round the houses about this again we won't get anyone better for less than £50m.

Fred just loves a goalscorer. No one has success without a 20 goal a season striker. Look how much it cost us when we gave Dicko away to Hull and look how well they have done...

I thought MGW was fantastic last night. Positive, direct, confident. I think he'll be a regular in the team by the end of the season.

He was great, and is certainly an able sub if one of the CMs is having a poor game, or if we're pressing, as yesterday, but I can't see him displacing either for a starting berth just yet. Who are you going to drop? If either CM leaves in the summer or really goes off the boil/is injured, though, we have a fine ready-made replacement.

Good weekend (even if it was a shitty journey back home with torrential rain for a large chunk of it).

As Lycan said this morning - would rather be losing 3 - 2 to Spurs than to Barnsley. We are still learning and don't have the full depth of squad of an established top 6 side, but clearly needed to start the first half with the impetus that we did in the second.

Against a side as good as Spurs you cannot lose concentration at any point - we did defensively in the first half & paid the price (even though it should have been 1 - 2 at that point - couldn't tell from where I sit, but having seen the highlights clearly not offside)

Comments others have made re Bennett are unfortunately correct - slightly too slow in thought & with a lower level of passing skill & any attack seems to slow down when he gets the ball. Whilst he was defending well in the early games that was fine but think that others have realised that he is the weaker link in our back line & it may well be time for a change.

Coady covered well & MGW was superb (for someone of his age that is remarkable & MoTD pundits were drooling over him)

Last point - anyone doubting Jiminez isn't watching - the work he put in was massive. Didn't stop running/moving at any point. Scored what should have been a very good goal & has a decent level of goals/assists so far (there aren't many Premier league strikers at the Salah (last season) or Aguero & they would cost a load more than he will)

Was talking with 3 Spurs fans who were also staying in Redwings last night - they were not unimpressed with us & admitted that they got very nervous in the last few minutes. Also said how good the atmosphere/noise in the Stadium was & as you would expect said that they will be supporting us next Sunday!

Yes, I love us scoring goals and goalscorers..great game and teamspirit yesterday though on that comeback, we deserved at least a point :)

I did laugh when Keane said we need a 20-25 goals a season striker. Might aswell pop a bid in for Kane then I guess.

I think Jiminez is excellent, his return of goals and assists is about right, the problem is our other forwards just aren't contributing enough atm, 2 goals from our other 4 regular front players is a problem. Having said that I'm very hopeful that they'll all come good over the course of the season. We will not sign a 20-25 goal striker that also fits in with style Nuno wants from his front man in the near future, they are few and far between and would probably cost upwards of 50 million

Last season only 4 PL strikers exceeded or equalled 20 goals so we won't be the only side seeking one of those

At the current rate Raul would get in the top 20 - not brilliant, but not unacceptable.

As said above we have insufficient from elsewhere in the front line which exposes him a lot more - it's not just down to him

Raul's a great player but given the back up available, we do need to sign another and I think we need to sign someone to aggressively compete for that position. Plus remember he is only on loan.

Leo was OK yesterday - did 'some' good work, but is not really a long term answer to our needs

When you are debating whether one of the U23's (Ennis/Ashley Seal) are on the bench instead then it is clear that he is not at the level we need to be at

Watched in the middle of a game reserve in South Africa, barely had WiFi that worked but a working HD SSN feed!
hugely disappointing but any talk of wholesale changes in formations are really premature (and still will be premature if we lose to arsenal next week).

Dendonker in for Bennett is a probably change, I'd like to see MGW with more game time but I don't think next week is a good time for him to start.

Finally, appalling from the lino, really sub-par, great position for him and he fucked it.
