Wolves 1-4 Brighton: Verdict Thread

I'll bite.

What gives you the impression that Fosun give a shit what we demand?

No but it might just put a stop to the malaise that’s set in and gradual acceptance of going from Europe to relegation battles as if it’s the norm.

No coach implements a complete tactical revision in the space of a week. We're still dealing with a Lop/Gary cocktail.

But they do, or at least you hope they do, prepare different plans and solutions for different teams.

Well, for one, I'd say it is the norm.

For the other, if the players can't break the malaise on the pitch without protests in the stands, we're fucked regardless.

Well 4-1 never looks good and if you’ve made your mind up on O’Neil already then fair enough you’re probably only going to be negative or it seems that way anyway but coming out with nonsense just devalues any criticism that is deserved. Things like Brighton kept us at arms length is just not factual is it, if that was the case Fabio and RAN don’t miss 1 on 1’s and we should have gone in level at half time on the balance of the game and chances created.

Now we came out from the very first moment of the second half hell bent on making ridiculous errors leaving us wide open. The back 5 and Gomes all poor at various points today that cost us goals and at this level no matter who the coach is you just can’t do that and we had no one to get hold of it on the pitch especially when we really needed to. There are serious worries about the consistency of whoever plays in the back 5 and our finishing but there were some good bits today undone by in particular a 10 minute spell just after half time that killed any chance we had.

In terms of O’Neil:

He picked the team most wanted and it worked in patches while also still being a little too open at times in the first 45 but Brighton will create chances against every side with how they play because they look to isolate players and go 1vs 1.

Has to stop with Neto down the right, he looks quite sharp again but he just doesn’t do what you would want from a left footed player on the right.

Has to be more proactive with subs and in game management such as swapping Neto back over today and subs were to slow on Monday.

Biggest take away from me really is when you look at their goals they come from issues that were here last year and the year before that and that’s because primarily the players are the same. Semedo can’t get near Mitoma, Kilman beat with a simple ball over his head, other centre half too far up and Kilman indecisive, whole back four too slow and passive. It’s genuinely going to be tough to keep clean sheets and be on top in games if they make those errors that they did today every week and nothing but playing other players that don’t really exist is going to rectify that but as Quirk mentioned goals change the flow of games so we really need to start taking those chances to get us on the front foot and in control.
Correct, first goal is usually crucial especially when playing a good team..of course changing the stress and approach for the rest of the game..

Reddit drooling over it but someone has to stop him surely? Semedo beaten easily and Gomes surely should be getting back quicker instead of watching it unravel, Dawson maybe thinking Kilman will come across and Kilman acting too late? Meh

Neto on the right I just don’t get. Arjen Robben he ain’t. He pretty dreadful cutting inside and all he was doing was floaty crosses anyway. Doesn’t seem capable or doesn’t want to go down the outside either

Did fuck all going the other way too leaving Semedo exposed. He needs to be much better at both ends but playing him on the else might get more out of him in the attacking third.

It’s only the norm if you become complacent and make shocking investments and appoint the likes of Lage and keep him then lie to his much better qualified replacement.

Equally, if O'Neil didn't understand Lop's tactics last week properly, he would have chucked them out the window.

We got today wrong in some areas tactically but the plan going forward wasn't awful, though the execution of it left a lot to be desired.

As ever, it's difficult to tactically legislate for the sorts of mistakes our CBs seem addicted to making; O'Neil certainly got it wrong today by leaving them so exposed. On the other hand, I understand how a manager arrives at a game plan and says "okay, this is a big risk but I have to trust the players I have". And in our case, I don't think Gary has much choice but to do just that.

When's the last time a side not named Manchester City went from being also-rans to genuine European competitors season after season?

I'm not defending the ways we've hashed the position we were in but let's not pretend that maintaining that standard was ever likely.

If Brighton are still this good in five years I'll be totally stunned. It just doesn't happen.

It looks like a goal before Mitoma even receives the ball. Such a good overload to create the space that all of the back line are stuck between wanting to go to challenge or sticking with their man.

I hope MOTD measure the gap between Kilman and Dawson there - at least 3 buses I suspect

I’m not saying maintaining a European push but it would’ve very achievable to makes us pretty solid at this level with only minor relegation concerns.

Gets by Semedo too easy but that can happen. Gomes stops running (thinks Semedo is going to foul him?) then Mitoma put the burners on and he’s out the game. Dawson inexplicably showing him inside, force the pass to Enciso and then get out to him, he isn’t scoring from there. Then Max for some reason doesn’t see that Mitoma is running directly at goal until it’s too late.

Semedo doesn’t get close enough to Mitoma and still gets beat, Gomes switches off and stops running. Dawson gets dragged and Kilman is slow and indecisive. We’ve seen it all before.

Semedo yanks Mitoma's shoulder in a way that I think would have made most attackers go to ground. Mitoma is built different.

Go read it again. I can't be bothered with you this evening.
Read it plenty, you made your mind up. 2 interviews 2 bullshit comments by you.

Not once has he said they were not ready.
Hard to disagree with anything he said to be honest.

Missed too many chances
Played well in part.

But for a Shocking 10 minutes where our players decided to go missing, it was not that bad.

Semedo should have made sure he went down.
Lack of professionalism, for every goal.
