Wolves 0-1 Norwich (FA Cup 4th Rd): Verdict Thread

Indeed. So he's clearly on more radar's now than he was before.

Thank you & goodnight.

Any club that's got a semblance of a decent squad and going to be giving the manager money to spend is a better proposition than us this summer.

Particularly if we lose João and Ruben.

I can see him walking ☹️
welcome to the dark side obi wan

Call me crazy but I think we're a better team under Bruno now than we were with Nuno.

Nuno's best season came with a pre-injury Jimenez, Jota up front, plus Neto as well. We still struggled to score goals at times and were mainly counter attacking.

I think with Bruno we have a better defence, because the purchase of Sa allows us to play a bit higher. We play better possession football too IMO. And we still are getting results just as good as under Nuno but without such a potent front line. If Bruno had a fully fit Jimenez/Jota/Neto as a front three I think we'd be top 4 material.

We made an FA Cup semi-final, a Europa League quarter final and twice finished higher than we currently are in the table.

You're crazy.

Also Raul is basically the same now as he was pre-injury, I wish people wouldn't peddle that. We create less for him so he scores fewer goals. He always had shit games before, loads of them.

Whilst that is true we also have a considerably meaner defence. We don't score enough to be top four material, but our defence seems to be.

Still think the two are linked, but that extra attacking player on the pitch and we score and concede more. Buy that commanding centre half and perhaps the latter doesn't happen. Still pissed off with Nuno for backing Traore over Jota tbh

I don't think it's far off tbh. Bruno's best eleven is nowhere near what Nuno had to work with.

And Raul is half the player he was in his peak, goals or not

I think they are linked too. Increase the scoring to top six level and the defence may possibly drop below top six level. A fine balance to achieve.

This really. Under Nuno pre-pandemic we were basically a top six performing team - genuinely! I think people have got short memories over this because of how poor we were last season both performance and aesthetics wise.

He really isn't.

Bruno has Semedo rather than Doherty which means we have one player in the XI covering one position rather than three to make up for someone not being able to run or defend.

Plus Bruno has Kilman knocking the lights out. Very few would have predicted that welcome rapid progression.

Kilman’s development this season is genuinely so impressive. Big plus in terms of what Bruno can do for individuals. I wouldn’t have been bothered if he’d left in the summer (loan or permanent). He looks a top class defender in a three.

If our season fizzles out in the next few weeks (very possible imo) I would go to a back four with him and Coady as the pairing. If it turns out he can play in a pair in a back four it’s a huge bonus.

It’s a really hard comparison to make. Yes we had two consecutive 7th places, the Europe run and the semi under nuno. However I’d argue nuno had a better team as we haven’t strengthened and are arguably weaker than we were then. Factor in other teams spending and strengthening, West Ham becoming what they are etc another 7th place finish would be a greater achievement now than under Nuno IMO.

Not taking anything away from Nuno achievements, but a like for like comparison is always difficult. I’d say Lage is doing a great job with what he has, as did Nuno.

Re Raul, I think it’s a combination of him not being at the level he was before, and us not creating as much. The only way to know really is if we start creating more chances and he still doesn’t start firing. My main concern with him is he seems to be dropping deeper than before, and when (rarely I grant you) we get decent crosses into the box or into positions for pull backs he’s never in a centre.

Wouldn’t be suprised if he scores a couple In consecutive games that may lead to him rediscovering previous form.

I want to see more if Chiquinho this month. I hope he is a rough diamond.
We have sold 3 first teamers in Doherty Jota and Traore and not replaced the goals from the first pair. Semedo defends better but the bar is low . I am looking forward to Neto and Hwang on the pitch to see how they go .
We may as well start preparing for next year. We probably won’t be in Europe and we won’t go down.

I think the next few weeks really will tell us a lot. Tough games. I think we’ve slightly overperformed so far (even in spite of those first 3 games!) and expect us to drop off slightly as a result at some point. If we manage to squeeze some points out of them though, and Neto and Jonny are properly fit we might make a fight of it yet.

There's an odd correlation between folk who are keen to stress what an upgrade Sa is on Patricio and those who seem to forget their own strong conviction when trying to argue our squad is worse than it was in 18/19 and 19/20. Not that odd maybe...!

Not really. My sandwich today was lovely. I doubt it'd be quite so good next Monday.
