West Ham (A) 27/9 Build up

Bit frustrated right now because there have been moments where we have shown our quality even if it hasn't worked out. Generally sloppy though, Saiss has not had a good half at all. Neto feels like the main attacking impetus right now, Traore quiet and it's a real shame that Podence is out.

What a bloody horror show that was. We simply have to play at a higher tempo - and, sadly for lovers of the Neves/Moutniho combo, we need someone in CN with some pace

xG for that first half is 1.53 - 0.27. We're exactly where we were in the final games of last season, creating very little

If this is team evolution I'm genuinely confused what it's evolving into

Equally, people are very quick to write players off.

I don’t think it’s case of that just people questioning whether two players in this system as it is at moment might not work in a 3-5-2 with Donk sat in the hole they work absolutely fine.

Last two years is quite good evidence

Last 2 years isn't now though to be fair. Not having anyone tell me that Joao is the player he was at the start of last season, not even close to that player in everything but especially in his ability to press and get the ball back and be in the right position. He plays the odd delightful pass like for our first goal of the season but he's making a lot of errors now too.

I think seeing how most of our signings are promising kids with little first team football we could be in for a rather transitional season if the senior pros don't get their shit together

If we play like this every week it will be a loooooonnnng and painful season

Time to sort it out.

We might go on to win 5-1, but right now I’m allowed to say it as I see it - and that first half was shocking.

Antonio giving our defence the run around. All three of Saiss, Boly & Coady all over the place. I’ve had enough of Vinagre now - he isn’t good enough. Semedo has blown hot and cold - understandable, I guess. Moutinho & Neves are neither giving us enough defensive cover OR enough support/men in the box when we actually attack. Difficult to see exactly *what* they’re offering at the moment?

Neto & Traore have both tried hard but I feel so sorry for them both. Sprinting 30 yards, beating men and then looking up to cross and seeing no one in the box - it must be demoralising for them. Raul has been fairy anonymous.

Reminders of last season going behind and needing to do it all in the second half.

As for the goal, the ball was moving and they took it about 5 yards ahead of where the foul was committed. Ref has done us over there but Saiss shouldn’t be backing off that much.

Nothing like a knee jerk reaction....

People get their kicks out of it, so I’m not someone to spoil there fun but it does baffle me.

Struggling to cope with an Alan Irvine managed team pumping it into the channels.

Saiss has to show him outside in the goal, school boy mistake.

Very little interplay in possession, nothing really testing West Ham just playing around in front of them for the most part.

Neves seems to have disappeared from shielding the back three. Whether that's a Nuno instruction, as he does seem to pop up further forwards now, or just a consequence of Moutinho losing form, I don't know.

We're not going to play like this every week. Look at the 1st half at Sheff Utd and the second half against City, we're still a very good side when we get it right. Nuno does have to figure it out rather quick though or we will probably look back at the end of the season again and blame the first few games for not being where we should.

How is it knee jerk? It was a genuine comment. We seem to have lost our counter attacking verve and I can't see what we've replaced it with. A bit more possession?

You’re talking about evolution after 2.5 games...

We went 3-5-2 last time we played West Ham and they never had a sniff. Tonight they've been right on us every time we loose the ball.

Doesn't help that the back 3 have been all over the place.
