UEFA Nations League & Euro 2020 Qualification

I think the Dutch miss a dominant striker but they're not average. They've probably get two of the best centre backs on the planet.

We have two of the best attackers in Kane and Sterling.

Dele Average done nothing (shock) since coming on against tired legs. Haven’t seen us work the keeper (or have any kind of shot) for the last 50mins, was out before that.

Ah well

Ah well

Defensively we sucked
Creatively we sucked
Pickford sucks
Stones sucked
Tactics sucks.
Pissed off to fuck again by an England team who fail to deliver.

Meh, it's still better than what we have become accustomed to before last year. It's still an improvement on losing on penalties in quarter finals (or worse as it has been for about ten years before this)

Does feel like another missed opportunity though

3 of their 11 make our side. We should have beaten them. We only started playing after they equalised and gift them a win with errors I'd barely expect to see from my Year 6 girls.

Like I said earlier, I wanted to win this but it's not even on the same planet as a World Cup or a Euros. I think the righteous anger is a bit OTT.

All four goals on the night were amateur hour. Getting towards crossroads time for Stones now. He's 25 and lost his place at City towards the end of the season. I remember when Rio first came through he used to make similar mistakes but he learned and by the time he was that age he was one of the very best defenders in the world, mainly as he knew when to play and when not to, and to recognise that defending is your 100% top priority.

We lack quality in CM (especially with Loftus-Cheek broken) and it hurts us. Switching to three at the back isn't the answer either, we'd create virtually nothing (look at the amount of goals we scored from open play in the World Cup, not many). If you look at Portugal potentially fielding Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho - as they should, William Carvalho is shite - then we're miles off that.

Ah well. Should have killed it at 2-0, we're millimetres from going in front in the 87th minute, we've gifted away goals - you have to go away and learn from it.

Oh come on, righteous anger?

Their last two goals were a joke for a park side to concede let alone an international team. I think righteous anger is completely appropriate. Awful defensive capitulation.

All the goals were rubbish, including ours (thanks to an equally awful error from the best player on the park).

However this is like Wolves doing it in a Checkatrade Trophy game. At a push an early League Cup game when we clearly have bigger fish to fry. Annoying yes, worth turning the colour of Robert Taylor after a 30 yard "sprint", no.

Sorry I completely disagree.

Try telling the fans of Portugal and the Netherlands its a sham tournament on Sunday. A win will boost the confidence of the team with the trophy. We could have done with that boost IMHO.

I told you, I wanted to win. I'm just not absolutely raging about it.

Go back and read your posts over the last hour or so.

Oh I am raging.

I am angry.

I will also not diss this tournament. Its far and away better than meaningless friendlies. Your meh attitude to the tournament is the difference.

I said earlier it was a good tournament. Pleased we got through an incredibly tough group. Could have won tonight, maybe even should have. It's not going to boil my blood though, if you want to burst capillaries then that's up to you. Seems disproportionate though.

It's a huge improvement on meaningless friendlies, so loads of kudos to UEFA for finding a relevant solution to that.

However, pretending it is the equivalent of the Euros or the World Cup is clearly nonsense.

Anyway, England got to the final four in a tournament with all the European serious players in it, and then the semi-final went wrong. You will have learnt a lot, same way as you will have learnt a lot from Russia 2018.

And that is why you will be a VERY live near-favourite for Euro 2020.

Southgate needs to learn that diving into the shell isn't the way to defend a slender lead. The defenders need to cut out nonsensical errors that are almost embarrassing, but there are still some useful lessons to take away that will make England a stronger side in 12 months or so.

I'd certainly take both centre backs, De Jong, Wijnaldum, Van De Beek and Cillisen over our players in their respective positions tonight.

The Dutch certainly weren't average.

I make it four inarguable ones:

van Dijk
de Ligt
de Jong
Wijnaldum (not that I'm his biggest fan but he's far better than Fabian Delph)

And then actually if you put Blind into midfield rather than at LB I'd have him too, given he can actually read play and pass the ball. There isn't much between Pickford and Cillessen, van der Beek is better than Alli off the bench. Depay wasn't great tonight and will always have a bad press here due to his spell at United (fair enough) but he's been at least as good for Lyon as Sancho has for Dortmund.

They're not average, they're vastly improved and continuing to progress after a woeful 4-5 years. Remember they beat France and Germany to get here.
