UEFA Nations League & Euro 2020 Qualification

Michael Keane is a pie faced liability, he was atrocious against us.

Though as my learned friend says, Coady is not going to be a centre half in a back four.

Yep. If England were still playing a back three he would have had a call up by now. Southgate has seen him live enough to know of his qualities, obviously just doesn't see him fitting in which is fair enough. Mind you, I'd still have him over Keane in a back four at that level.

Our midfield options are still pretty uninspiring aren't they

Answers on a postcard why we have three right backs and three left backs.

At least it's only three goalkeepers on this occasion :D

Feel for Coady when inferior players to him like Keane and Tarkowski have been called up, but they are inferior in a different position. Unfortunately for him he's come to the PL a year too late

Not surprised at all, as said Coady plays in a different system plus Southgates recent results pretty much justify his selections. Not like England are picking up poor results of late.

Not surprised about Coady.

Why does he keep leaving Smalling out? He's a better option than both of Keane & Tarkowski surely?

He doesn't like Smalling on the ball.

However he is absolutely not worse than Keane in that respect.

Shame for him, great for us. He has no Irish in there does he?

Always half a chance coming from St Helens...

By Christ our fans are whiny on this subject (this is Twitter here). "Deserves" does not come into it. If someone doesn't fit then what is the point in picking them? To pick another example, Mitrovic has been brought up on here a lot, I don't think there is any chance he would work in our team. So do I think he is a good player, yes, do I acknowledge he has a good record of late, yes, would he be a good player for someone else, yes, would I want Wolves to sign him, absolutely not.

This is the same principle.

James "as good as David Beckham" Ward-Prowse called up.

Henderson, Stones, Delph and Loftus-Cheek have all withdrawn.

Is he the only one who has been added considering that is four out?

I thought Rashford might withdraw too, he looks exhausted at the moment.

At the moment yes. Although it is odd that we've lost three CMs - we only ever play Delph there - and we think one will do to replace them all. Especially as Dier hasn't played much football in the last three months and Rice is on his first call up. Then again, we haven't got many out there.

The FA still have Henderson listed in a 23 man squad but everywhere else seems to think he's out. He wasn't in Liverpool's squad yesterday.

Not much in the way of English talent available right now. Are we down to the Isaac Hayden's of the world?

Longstaff might have been worth a shout but he is injured now.

Danny Drinkwater really did wreck his own career.

Just put Foden in, he's going to be our best player soon enough anyway.

I don't think he can play in a deeper role, which is where we are struggling imo.

Very good player though.

I think his best position will be the one David Silva (and now bernardo) has under Pep as the 8 in the midfield three. As this is what Southgate is trying to do (4-3-3) with England he will make that role his own eventually I think.

We really do have an issue in that position, where Henderson is the main option there. I'm not sure who we have in short term coming through who can do that role. Garner at United is highly rated.

There are two players currently in England U16 set up who I think have massive chances of being of the quality we need to make another step forward but that is long term (and no guarantees as we well know with young prospects).

Will Hughes is unlucky not to be called up this time. I know Watford play a bit of a weird system but he always played in a midfield three for Derby and the U21s.
