UEFA Nations League & Euro 2020 Qualification

It pains me to say it but I am really met with our national team. Little about how they play excites me. The lack of creativity in midfield

Yes sarcastic Cyber. The second half against Croatia we played well without a finishing touch but everything we touched tonight went in. If Jonnys foul on Sterling just after half time was given as a penalty the 2nd half would have been far more comfortable.

A cracking game!

Agree with most on here, excellent game of football I even enjoyed the 2nd half. Key not to get carried away but I’m sure we’re moving in the right direction.
Just imagine if BFS was in charge of that game tonight and how we’d have approached it.

Thought Jonny looked a bit lost, no man's land for the first, culpable for the second and should have given a penalty away. Hopefully he doesn't play for Spain for another year ans Atleti decide he's shit and bin him off.

Chuffed with the result and a good game to watch. But England to be 3-0 up and Sterling and Rashford to be the scorers? Bookies had a good night I'd say!!

Well that was a bit phew for a monday night!

Pickford went from heroto zero in two halves. Sterling and Rashford punished Spain for being so arrogant they thought they could defend on the half way line against pace. Defensively sound. Chilwell looked great. Winks did ok too in glimpses. Kane has a real football brain on him and Sterling and Rashford had clinical head on for a change. Much more enjoyable. Not at all Met!

I really enjoyed that. proverboial game of 2 half's, however the ref missed a few fouls, the 2 pens being the most obvious.
The nations league can only be good for England, the more you play competitive games against the top teams the more you win the more confidence that you can beat them.

Beating a Spanish team that has been on fire recently at home in a competitive game their first defeat for 15 years can only give our players a massive boost in confidence.

I must be in the minority, I thought we were shite and Spain were robbed (the referee was dreadful for both teams). No creativity in midfield and were it not for individual brilliance we would've been stuffed out of sight.

Southgate is a very lucky man. I think he's a poor manager and nothing about last night tells me any different, our version of Jack Charlton.

HTF was Spain Robbed?
We passed the ball well first half, created 3 superb goals.
2nd half was always going to be tough but if the ref had given the foul.
Thought we totally deserved the win.
They had more passes but created very little and don't remember Pickford having a good save to make after the first 5 minutes.
Goal one was of the back of a 17 pass move, that if Spain had scored everyone would have been raving about it

I wouldn't go quite as far as that but I was cringing a little about how Sky were going on about it being a historic win that would be talked about in the same breath as the 5-1 vs Germany.

We beat an under strength Spain side (albeit not at full strength ourselves) with stats of

Spain 24 shots to Englands 5 and Spain having 74% possession. A good win but one which needs to be taken into context a bit,

Spain had 23 attempts on goal, hit the bar and post and Pickford made a world class save, that isn't creating very little. Along with their 73% possession and stream of creating chances I thought they were due a penalty and a sending off as Pickford man handles Rodrigo. We were lucky and Spain were robbed, if it was the other way around there'd be plenty of bleating about being robbed.

Our first goal was a direct pass from Pickford and then two superb passes. We were clinical with our chances and created very little with the ball in the final third and our play is generally counter attacking and dependent on huge gulfs of space we can exploit 1v1. That's OK and it worked well last night but essentially we are Norway in the 80's and England are a better team than that with better players.

I thought it was bordering on long ball defensive football, the type I hate, which may be colouring my opinion. That's not to say we are equipped to play Spain in their own backyard at their own game when we don't have the technical class but to rave on like we deserved to win by channelling the spirit of Arrigo Sacchi is wide of the mark.

You put a first half performance like they did defensively then you can’t say you’ve been robbed.
Spain hit the bar but it was hardly the Alamo, they should have had a penalty but so could England. Majority of their goal attempts were outside the box.

Goal 1 was 17 passes it was not route 1
Goal 2 was a long pass
Goal 3 was an excellent break
We should have had a pen and sending off before the Pickford fuck up, Sterling would have been clean through and it was no attempt to play the ball.
I did not realise percentage possession was so important it determines who wins and loses
The first half in particular we did not play the long ball
2nd half we played longer but at 3-0 it's always going to be don't give anything away after all it was not a friendly

it was not an under strength Spanish team, it was a team sent out to win the nations league.

we looked every bit a top quality team, you only have to look at Ramos, and Enrique's comments to see that actually we are a top international team with a bright future.

We clearly watched different games Glasgow.

Check the stats for the first goal 17 passes
Do you disagree that Sterling was fouled prior to their first goal?
Watch the first half again the number of times we popped the ball around to get us out of trouble.
That Spanish team with the exception of Jonny, and he possibly deserved the call up was as strong as the team that put 6 past Croatia.

it was the youngest team since 1959 the future under Southgate is looking excellent.
Word Cup Semi final, deservedly beating Spain in there own back yard, playing much better football than we have before.
Not saying iyour one,

however some people on Social media, and the BBC comments made their mind up about Southgate, and refuse to change it no matter what he or the team does.
I can see a tournament win inside the next 2 tournaments

The Count of Monte Bisto was drooling over the performance as well.

It was a 29% possession smash and grab created through outstanding finishing. Long pass for the second? If was hoofed fucking goal kick, hardly a Neves special.

Smash and grab is harsh.
Up until the 1st goal we were 2nd best and Spain probably should have scored but once we scored we put their defence under some pressure, the 3rd goal coming from them being unable to clear their lines 3 times. We were, for once, clinical in front of goal and took advantage of how high a line Spain played and how far up the pitch Jonny was, effectively a right winger at times.
2nd half should have extended the lead early on and up until the Spanish goal we had defended well, don't think Pickford had a great deal to do. Once it was 3-1 though Spain pushed us back and as happens we got deeper...then got lucky when Pickford decided to lose his shit. He gets punished for that and we don't win that game...but he didn't and we did.

We weren't brilliant but I think we had a decent game plan and for the best part of the game we stuck to it well and frustrated a very very good Spanish team. Certainly not a Big Sam type performance because we actually had a plan on how and where to attack when we got the ball in the 1st half rather than lump it at Harry and hope it sticks.

Eh? You're joking that we played good football? We had less than 30% possession. You need the ball to actually play good football. It was a counter attacking performance of high precision. It isn't often that any team scores all of its shots on target and to not have a single shot in the second half isn't conducive to a deserved victory and certainly not one playing good football.

A win is a win but the football is horrible to watch IMO just the same as BFS's is horrible to watch. I don't see how popping the ball around in your own defensive third and then passing it long is good football. It was designed to draw Spain into playing their high line and high press so we could isolate their defenders against the pace of our front 3 and it worked. Fair play to Southgate for getting that right in the first half and the hubris of the Spanish tactics gave him the opportunity to do do just that. But much like the World Cup when the opposition steps up the quality in possession we look shit and Southgate has no answers.

I haven't seen anything from this current England setup that instills the hope you have Glasgow and fair play to you for believing we could get to a final let alone win one. We had an easy route to the semi-final and came up against a good team and we lost. Fair play to Southgate for that, but the football then as it is now is pretty dire to watch.

It’s a bit like Wolves at City last year (yes the gulf in player quality was a lot higher). We sat back, rode our luck and then had a few counters we could have scored from. Nothing wrong with playing like that away to a better team. Let’s not pretend we played champagne football though. Spain defended 3 v 3 on the half way line against pace and got punished twice (both long kicks from the GK...). The third was a well worked goal but Spain literally gifted us the ball being sloppy.

Good result, well executed game plan helped with a degree of luck. Law of averages suggest with all things being equal, that result wouldn’t happen again.

xG had Spain winning 1.93 to 1.66. So we rode our luck a bit, but this wasn't a total mugging. (If you buy into xG, which I do to a point).

This is a mugging, for reference:

In news probably shocking to no one, Ireland v Wales has been universally awful.
